Looking for a 47 or 48 Foot Boat

I am looking to upgrade our 1974 Cascade 42 that we keep in HI. We have a 50 foot slip in Pearl Harbor and the biggest boat they will allow is 48 feet. The boat is used for day sails mostly but is taken to the outer islands 2 or 3 times a year. It has been to every island several times except the Big Island. We bought it in Seattle back in 2000 and sailed it to HI. My budget is going to be around $400,000. I have been looking at Tayana 48's, Stevens 47's and Hylas 47's. My wife and I live on the boat 2-3 months a year during the winter when we are in HI. The rest of the time our oldest son who lives in HI uses the boat. When it goes on outer island trips it is gone for a week to 10 days with at least 5 guys on it. When we started this adventure we were 51 and now we are 65 and the wife wants a more comfortable bed/sleeping arrangements if we are going to continue spending that amount of time on the boat during the winter. I prefer a center cockpit which accommodates the larger aft cabin. Any suggestions and advise on which boats to stay away from given it's location or boats that you would recommend that I should also consider would be greatly appreciated. Also sloop/cutter rigged only no ketch's

If I were upgrading it would be the Hylas 46, or the Outbound 46. Strong, Quick, Comfortable, Pretty.

Dennis, our experiences here are generally for skippers with much smaller boats, although there are some with larger ones. You might want to consider trying your question over on www.cruisersforum.com, they have a large selection of topic areas, i.e., liveaboard, etc. Good luck.

Yeah. I'd like to be helpful but boats of that size are outside my experience and HI is completely outside my experience. I was once impressed with an Oyster as it sailed past us in a race and looked pretty damn comfortable doing it. If my circumstances ever permit it I would give them a look. But it sounds like a great plan and give me a shout if you need crew.

i would look very closely at a Passport. Very well built comes as a cutter rig. Center cockpit with aft cabin. Other options are Little Harbor or Hinkley.

...enviable budget. Good luck in the search, a center cockpit was what first came to mind when I started reading your post, then voila, you already had that in mind....and if you need delivery crew to HI......

7 Year cruise

I know a couple who cruised for about 7 years on a 38' Island Packet and lived
on it for about a year in a Marina here in Punta Gorda.
Island Packet's are very well built and heavy and not fast but good for heavy weather.

that is correct about the speed and heavy weather Nick ...the inside of these boats is like going to the Hilton and staying in the King bed suite ...lots of room in there and well equipped......

Thanks for the suggestions. I have always liked the Hylas 46. I must have been having a senior moment when I did not put it into the equation.

I did get to see the inside of a 49 Hunter WOW what room and so big and beautiful,we all know Hunters are built for comfort and I am sure everyone
will say a :eek:Hunter:eek: not for Blue water but don't know his name but did
cruise around the world in this 49 Hunter.
I don't want to start anything just could not help mentioning it,love my Hunter
and when ever we cruising with so many other sailboats they all like my H-36.
But on a trip we did recently some one said to this couple who have a 42 Hunter
CC that Hunters are not very sea worthy and they the 42 Hunter said we love our boat and been cruising to Bahamia and more many times in some nasty weather and they said the boat did just great.

I've only been on 3 boats that fit your criteria and 2 of them were Cooper Mapleleafs (Mapleleaves ?).:) The other was a Gulfstar Sailmaster, I didn't sail either more than a few hours but they are 47-48 ft. center cockpits.;)

Id suggest to look at a Tayana 48 (or 47) ... one of Bob Perry's 'favorites'.
The only downside is the mast height will prevent passage under all those common 65ft. height bridges in the world.

Note: most interiors on Tayanas are 'semi-custom' .... built to the preferences of the owners layout needs. For used boats, you'll hardly ever find two interiors that are exactly 'the same'.

Najad 460 would be perfect for you. But you may have to go to Europe to find one for sale. Also, the price would dictate an older boat for sure.

A friend of ours had a Maple Leaf 42 out here in HI. It had a ton of room. I do not like the Maple Leaf 48 because of the aft cabin exit into that aft small cockpit. That setup does not allow for a center line walk around bed. Most of Maple Leaf's that I have seen have a shallow draft with a center board which I am not inclined to do.

I think the Tayana 48 would be my first choice. Although that Hylas 46 is a nice boat as well. There is a 1995 Tayana 48 in the slip right behind me on Bravo dock. Great looking boat with a ton of room. It sailed in from the west coast last year. That boat is how I know that they will let you bring a 48' boat in the marina. The rules say max 47'. There is a very nice 2008 DS version I have been watching the price come down on. Oh and the bridge thing not a big consideration out here!!
