I am looking at a 1983 Hunter 22 (fixed keel) for $2k. It seems like a good deal. The boat's in good shape (from what I can determine by looking at it). Should I be concerned with blistering? Does anyone know if blistering is a common problem? What other things should I look for?

We had a fixed keel 22 for a couple of years and really enjoyed it.

Very Nice interior; good room for a 22 and nicely appointed. Check the mast step to be sure it isn't sagging or soft and the compression post. The toe rail is a potential leaky area as are the chain plates. These boats are a little better than many in that some of the hardware is bolted to an embedded plate instead of thru the decking. Blisters may be here but unless they are very large (golfball & larger) they are not a huge deal but check the rudder carefully as it can be prone to water intrusion. Good Luck!

Suggest a surveyor

If the boat is in the water, take out and inspect the hull. Inspect the mast, sails, rigging and make sure the motor is running. Are the lights working and if at all possible, look at the boat on a rainy day. You will find if the boat leaks or not on the topsides. If you do not know what you are doing, get someone experienced. If there is a trailer involved, look at the bearings, tires, leaf springs axle and the frame itself. It is easy to replace wiring and lights on the trailer.

I agree on the deal

I agree with you--I can absorb some problems at this price. It has no trailer. The interior is in fantastic condition. It has a working outboard, no sponginess on the deck. Main and jib are in good shape, but the genoa is rough.

A good deal!!

I purchased a 1985 hunter 22 Fixed keel about 6 yrs ago for $2500. It had sat in the water most of its years and had at least 6 inches of growth. I had it cleaned and taken out of the water and not one blister to be found. This model is extremely durable, with a great layout. We've had to update over the last couple years and we continue to enjoy it. Where do you get this much fun for only 2k!!
