I'm considering buying an 81' hunter 30, I am told it needs the transmission replaced? IT Has a 13 hp yanmar. I haven't seen the boat yet. Will see it tomorrow but what can I expect to experience with this transmission as far as cost and what would be the best course to take, repair or replace. Not sure the make or model of transmission at this point.

I'm sure someone with Yanmar engine and transmission knowledge will guide you.
It's not likely you have the same one I have so I can't answer your specific question about your possible transmission. But, after you look at the boat, let us know any other questions you may have.

13hp is pretty low for that size/weight of a boat. I know they came with them and alot are repowered with a 16-18hp. That being said its all a guess. All you can do it ID the transmission, ascertain what the issue is from the owner and try to troubleshoot the issue. I'd check the fluid for volume and clarity at least. I'd get a look at the prop/shaft to see if there is any damage. Our vintage Hunters are well known for the pressure post support in the bilge. See if it is replaced. If it isn't, then it will need to be. Mine looked ok till I removed it and the vertical webbing on the I-Beam had a big hole in it I couldn't see because of fiberglass over it.

I had a transmission on a Yanmar 2GM rebuilt by Mack Boring in New Jersey about 8 years ago for about $950. If money were no object, a new transmission would be preferable.

Or a complete repower, even with a used (not abused) engine.

that would get the value of the vessel almost down to the "free" area. Especially if you are going to pay someone to do it.

I'll second that. I have a '99 H-31 with a yanmar 2GM20F and that is on the lower border line for power. A 1GM20F would definitely be underpowered. If you have no interest in power other than into and out of the marina, the smaller engine might be acceptable.

I have an O’Day 322, about 10,000 pounds….with a 2GM20F. She pushes the boat fine, BUT, I am on the Great Lakes and don’t have to contend with any currents.

Yes, more power would be OK, but I usually motor 15 minutes out of the harbor, and 15 minutes back in. Occasionall, if I have to motor somewhere, the 2GM20 pushes my boat 6 knots @ 3,000 RPMs with a 2-blade fixed prop.

But, I don’t ever really fight a current.

I think the 2gm is the 13hp and the 2gm20 is the 16-18hp models.

Thanks Mike…I was always confused by reference to 13HP and what I thought mine was…I thought 18 HP.

Didnt realize we are talking about 2 different engines.

Sorry to the OP for misleading info.

Welcome to the forum!!

Suggest getting a material/labor quote for the transmission and engine survey from you local diesel boat mechanic.

Had to do a little digging around as I have a 2GM20F, but, no such thing as a 13 HP Yanmar either at continuous or maximum rating.

The HP doesn't change from sea water cooled to fresh water cooled (antifreeze) as the block (displacement) doesn't change. Engines are always rated by their maximum output.

Check the name plate on the front of the block and number of cylinders to be sure but I've got two nickels and a ball of lint that says it's a 2GM20F. The 1GM isn't made for fresh water (antifreeze) cooling according to my shop manual.

Sorry @MikeHoncho , missed your point that the engine is pre-1983 2GM? (13 HP @3400) as opposed to a post-1983 2GM20? (16 HP @3400).

Boat is a 1981 Hunter. Kind of makes sense that the engine would be a pre-1983 engine.

There can be confusion with people calling the 2gm20 a 16 or a 18 ho engine . It is the same engine with ho ratings at different rpms

The model should be identified on the back of the transmission. It was a piece of cake to remove mine. I had to extract some starter shrapnel from inside the bell housing. Long story. I would suspect rebuilding yours would be the cheapest route but also the longest downtime. Next cheapest would be a rebuild. I think that would be as good as a new one if it came from a very good shop.

Many years ago I bought a 1980 H30 with a dealer installed upgrade engine that was a 2QM15 - 15 HP. Just about the corrrect power for that boat.
