Ahoy out there! I am looking at buying an Oday 25, 1975 and don't know what I should be looking for. I have a Catalina 22 and have owned other boates so I know the basics, but what about this boat that is special or things that are known problems with this boat that I ought to be looking for. It is dirty and needs some TLC but otherwise it looks good. The sails have been stored along with the cusions off the boat in the owners home and are in good shape. We are looking to move up from our C-22 so we can spend the weekend on it with our 3 and 5 year olds. Is this a sae relyable boat, and what are the best features of this boat. What do you think it's strongpoints are? Please let me know what you know! Art <(((><

O'Day 25
Art: I haven't had any problems with my 1978 model, but I know from monitoring this site that you need to take a good look at the chain plates and the bulkheads. It seems that this is an area of concern for the O'Day 25. Make sure that there is no sign of water entering through the chain plate bedding that may have infiltrated the bulkheads and caused rot. Also, I'd take a careful look at the decking and mast step area for cracking and softness. Either of those problems could mean a nasty repair. Otherwise I think that these are great boats. Classic lines, comfortable for their size, and decent sailers.

We bought ours from photos on the internet.The previous owners had replaced the starboard bulkhead due to chainplate leaks. The only things that some might consider a negative are:Very heavy towing, odd galley stove placement and wasted space under the cockpit. I can raise and lower the mast by myself safely even with the boat in the water.Don't let people let you think that the mast raising takes several people. One thing you NEED to be aware of is the rudder sits lower than the shoal draft.I cracked my transom by installing the rudder while the boat was on the trailer and then launching the boat. There are kick up rudders available .Our boat prior to this was a 1973 Catalina 22. We paid $5500 for our 1981 25 Oday with an electric start 7.5 outboard ,on a trailer.For less than an addtional thousand we had the interior redone in sunbrella ,added a new autopilot and installed new stereo,bulkhead compass and had the sails serviced by Sailcare!

I love our 25 Oday
I had to chime in. We sail a 1979 Oday 25. Love her, we looked at a Mac 25 and an Oday 23 before we chose. I believe that we chose wisely. Our boat was in good shape, not great when we got her. The previous owner had just replaced all the running rigging and all the expensive stuff was in very good condition. She had an older 7.5 hp Honda on the back that pushed her very well, up until the day that it died. We replaced it with a brand new Mercury 9.9 that is excellent. Only regret that we didn't pony up for a motor with a battery charging system. The headroom in the cabin is great for a boat this size. More than comfortable for weekending and it sleeps the 4 of us very well. She is on a brand new aluminum trailer that probably only had 200 miles on her. She trails great behind our Expedition. Slick ramps are a problem though. As they are with anyone. We sail in Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, and have found most of the shallow spots. Yes, the rudder hangs lower the the keel, that is a problem. When you do find a shoal, it does stress the transom. All in all, I highly recommend an Oday 25. She is rock solid, handles weather well and in my opinion a very safe little boat. Just my 2 cents. Ross in Tampa 1979 Oday 25 Lola

The current owner says that the boat has been in the water (fresh) for about 4 years and had a new bottom put on her shortly before that. I have not hauled the boat, what am I likely to find? I think that the 25 is similar if not the same as my 26,I would recommend a survey , the bulkheads[check the bottom of the head sink for water after a good rain]and the soft spots others have already mentioned. A great boat all in all.Rudy at d@r i very helpful for all your needs. Good Luck

Well I went to take a good look. I found no soft spots in the deck, but lot's of spider cracks. The mast step seems to be good. The interior is rough. The vinal on the inside of the cabis is coming off big time. All the paint onthe underside of the hatches is flaking off. It has closed turnbuckles so those have to be replaced. It is dirty and the hull need some major work to bring it back. The bulkheads seem to be ok, dry, strong. The crank for the center board just keeps turning so I assume that the pennant has broken. Last bottom job was 7-8 years ago but in fresh water. The outboard has remote controls but it has not run in 4 years sothat will need work. Well what do you all think? Is this boat worth it? there are many unknowns. Can any one out there ball park twhat it might cost to get these things done in total. HELP Thanks Art

Yes I admit that it might be an expensive cheap boat. I am no stranger to working on boats, but I want to make sure that I can do all most all of the work myself. The sails are in good condition and I wll replace some of the running rigging. The standing rigging looks to be in good shape as does the mast. Truly it is dirty and a thorough cleaning would help. I will look for a surveyer in my area before I commit. The most glaring thing I would need to do looks wise is this fabric on the inside of the hull anyone have any suggestions on an inexpensive replacement? Art

Art. Remember, most of the fun in boating is knowing that the condition of your boat is the elbow gerase you put into it. My situation is like yours. I bought a Oday 25, it was a trash bin. Looking under the dirt i was able to see some fun with a new project. Because of the price, i did not have it survayed, the rigging is worth more than what i paid. It did come complete. Two sets of sails,auto pilot,VHF,jib furler,anchor,9.9 suzuki that the dealer that serviced it said it was a special that was made for sailboats and it is in almost new condition. All the cushions, life jackets, sails, electroinics were stored in the house of the past owner. A friend who builds fiberglass boats said the hull was in good condition. The swing centerboard works great. It also came with five sailboat stands. So, you can get a good deal. So if you feel good about the boat, then buy it. The next time you go buy the marina pick yourself up a five gallon bucket of elbow grease and have some fun.
