So I fell in love with sailing and currently own a Sovereign 17 which is a super boat but as my wife says its too small. I came across a 1976 O'Day 22 for sale for $1500 with...

9.9 Evinrude
Genoa jib furling system
fixed keel
12 gallon fuel tank (wow)
newer rudder handle
owner claims boat and motor winterized (is still rapped)

The only issue is a small rip the main that needs fixing (no idea on costs there). I am trying to think if this is a worth wild upgrade, I hear good things about O'Day quality.

Finally I am going to look at the boat Sunday so any advice on what to look for would be helpful.

I would hold off on it and set my sights on an O'Day 222 or an O'Day 23 built after 1974. These boat's have keel/centerboards and are more capable for going to weather than the stubby keel OD 22. However, if you can find a keel/centerboard OD 22 in good shape, you should consider it.
