Hi All, I've been wanting a Hunter 336 since last year when we chartered one in Florida. My chance has arrived to buy a freshwater 336, what problem areas should I pay particular attention to. Thanks for your help!

336

John- I have a 1996 Hunter 336 and I an very pleased with it. No "problem" area per say. the only items that have given me trouble were a defective battery charger that caused perfireral damage to some electronics when it went bad. The Wema gauges work but the sending units are junk they break all the time however I understand that Wema has a new design that is better (I gave up on my fresh water and holding tank sending units) Not that important to me. I would strongly advise you to have a compent surveyor inspect the boat (both on land and a "sea trial") The boat is pretty bacis and well built Good Luck ! Let us know if you purchase it !

I'm Happy

We also chartered a 36 first and then bought one. No real problems on our 1986. I'll list the minor things. Hard mail to hoist; gauges all defective; strange water leak just below forward v-berth ( I think it comes if you over fill the water tank); leak around mast which shows up in compression post where water pours out when table is raised/lowered; dutchman system if you have one is a pain; topping lift gets in the way of the big rouch if you are not careful. Overall extremely pleased however.

Solid Boat

I have a 95 336. I have replaced the sending units in the fresh water tank, and the holding tank. The new ones are still working after two years. Total cost to replace was less than $100.00. I also replaced my depth transducer with a retractable one. I have replaced one plastic door latch. Rear cabin ventilation could be better. Other than that the only problem I have is leaky cabin ports. I think this is a common problem. The Yanmar engine is bullet proof. The cabin is large and we have had no problem sleeping six. The cockpit is great. You will have to reef at 15 knots to reduce heal. Get a spinnaker for downwind sailing or sail on a broad reach downwind. It's a fast boat on all points with the exception of a dead run. That's the only drawback of having a B&R rig. Buy the boat (get a survey 1st). You won't be sorry. I have had people e-mail me asking if I was interested in selling because so few were on the market. George S/V Windswept BTW hi Pete

Good Boat

We bought a 1996 336 in 1998 and are very happy with it. We primarily use it for cruising so have added some extras, like an electric windlass and refridgeration. The only minor problem we encountered was with the Yanmar 3GM30 diesel - Hunter uses a fairly poor plastic vent loop, installed above the Yanmar air intake. This vent loop tends to leak water from the raw water cooling line, which can be sucked into the air intake and then into the engine (I know one individual who had his engine fail because of this porblem), I was forwarned and replaced the vent loop with a bronz one made by Volvo, which has solved the problem. Other than that, I think the 336 is a great boat for the money. Happy sailing.

Thanks for your response

Thank you for your kind responses, I have taken all of your comments into consideration, I'll be purchasing the boat if the survey checks out.

iron keel to hull cracks

Our 1989 336 only problem is where the iron keel meets the hull. Every year it will develop a crack at that joint. It can be dug out and filled but it only last one season. See other articles on this problem.

Help me out here

Okay guys. I have seen two posts here that refer to 336 models from the 1980s. I understand that they only made this boat from 1994 through 1996, then changed it slightly and made it the 340. It is easy enough to refer to the specs on this site, but it is really tough to argue with a guy who tells us he owns one. What is going on?

336 was a 90's boat

the 80's were the Legend-era; could be some confusion with the 33.5...
