Good sound boat. New engines and news ails are expensive. Use a licensed surveyor.

Great boat. Strong as a tank. Deep draft sails much better up hill than the shallow draft boats. Both share the same rudder. The deep keel protects the rudder, the shallow keel does not. Watch for rudder damage on shallow draft models. My hull number (42) and earlier need chainplate re-enforcement. I don't know the model year they fixed this, but I looked at #77 and it was corrected. Boats with Merriman steering are kind of screwed as far as spare parts go. Plan on replacing all the plastic ports which are junk. Expect wiring problems which will drive you insane. In my humble opinion, the boat sails much better as a sloop. Even if you want to keep the staysail, get rid of the runners. They really don't do a thing except get in the way and are not needed for 90 square feet of sail.

Having said all that, you will not find a more sea kindly, very fast cruising boat. I bought mine new in Dec 1978 and have sailed the wheels off her. We still ocean race the old girl and win way more than we should. You can't go wrong with this boat as long as you are realistic about the fairly minor problem areas.

Just curious about removing the cutter rig, anything that need beefing up when that extra rigging is gone?

Re: C 37

Most people just leave the rig as-is and fly just a single large Genoa-jib like a sloop. The inner staysail is actually useful during bad weather or in an emergency when navigating in tight quarters. No one says that you have to fly both headsails all the time. It's all about flexibility. Besides...it just looks good with two head sails.
Runners and staysail rig don't amount to much weight or windage-wise, in any measureable way. If you're looking to go faster upwind tight, new main and jib sails will deliver what you're looking for without the expense and hassle of removing gear. That extra gear just might save your mast in a big blow, even if you don't regularly use it while sailing. If performance is what you're REALLY looking for get a J-boat or a Farr...

Re: C 37

My main thought was fouling and wear on the head sail when turning.

Guess I'll focus on getting the boat first, then start my trials...

Jeff 37c:

That you have come back to this thread a couple of time suggests that you do have interest in the 37c.

I don't think anyone answered your first question about where to look for info about the boat.

Here is a link to this forum's owner review page for the Cherubini Hunter 37:

http://hunter.sailboatowners.com/index.php?option=com_brevs&model=38&Itemid=170

Also use the search button way up top in the blue section. Then you can search for 37c issues. People have asked countless times over the years for pre-purchase info and opinions. And usually with details responses. Might take some time, but you should be able to find threads that will help you.

Also try clicking on the Boat Info button way up top. Navigate to the Hunter 37c. More info there.

Thanks,
Read a lot about issues with the plywood core around portholes, wiring and the holding tank...
Sounds like a good boat overall...
Nothing unusual to look for I guess....
Looking at her tomorrow....

Those are the main points, give the rudder a good luck as well. Is it straight, are there any cracks or skin de-lamination. Don't worry about the cutter rig - if you try it you will love it.

Maybe not dazzling, reportedly "original" condition, so I may be the lucky guy who gets to bring her back to life....

We love ours, have had it since 1999. I totally respect that others sail as a sloop but find that on San Francisco bay, for family sailing, the cutter rig is nice. On staysail alone, with single or double reefed main she is nice.

It is also fun to dust boats that cost their owners 10 times (no kidding - $250,000+ vs $25,000) what ours cost us.

Well I don't recall reading any rule that every Cherubini Hunter must remain "UP OVER"

"DOWN UNDER" is just fine.

Please come back on occasion to inform us as you get down and dirty with you new boat.

Are you sailing it across the pond?

Yes, Rardi, the plan is to sail it home. I'm currently assessing what needs doing before I set off. Once I have a prioritized 'to do' list I'll ignore it and start 'messing about' on my boat. :p

Whelp ... my first attempt was aborted. 200 NM of stinking bad weather and ...

1. Electrical issues that I thought I had resolved re-appeared and batteries wouldn't hold charge. No power = no auto-pilot = no sleep for a single hander.
2. Salt water ingress to the fresh water tanks. I'm guessing heeled over the over-fill outlets were syphoning sea water back into the tanks. Still to investigate this so that's just my best guess.
3. Running the engine to get some power back into the batteries I fell asleep in the cockpit. Wind swirling around the (large) dodger brought exhaust fumes into the cockpit. How do you spell carbon monoxide? Sick as a brown dog for 48 hours.
4 The sad old mainsail that was on the boat when I bought it split a seam. But I was prepared! I had purchased a 2nd hand sail that looked to be in reasonable condition. Less than 12 hours later that split a seam as well.
5. Numerous small leaks in ports, mast collar, deck fittings etc that hadn't shown up before.

So 200NM back to Channel Islands Harbor to recuperate and repair. 400 NM test sail, I'll call that.

The good news? I'm really impressed with how well the old girl handled 40-ish knot winds and big seas. At no point did the boat do anything scary.

So ... still in California. Not a terrible place to be stuck, really. :p I'll let you know how my next effort goes.

Sounds like you had the sea trial of sea trials! You are safely back in port. A good thing.

Were you out at the same time the heavy north winds caused all the mayhem at Avalon, Catalina Island, California? Apparently it was a real blow.

Hopefully others with heavy weather blue sea sailing experience on Cherubini Hunter 37's will sound in.
