Catalina 250 Wing Beaver Lake - Starkey
Hey guys. I'm looking at buying either a Hunter 27-2 or a Hunter 280. Looking at both this weekend. Anything specific I need to watch for on either of these models? Noticed on the 280 that one of the port lights has cracks in the corner of the glass (below). Not sure if anyone knows the cost of repair or replacement on this? Thanks for any info. Also any info on benefits of one

model over the other etc. Thanks!

Hi @SeaRags,

I owned a Hunter 280 a while back, and really enjoyed her. Mine had a full-batten main sail, Harken Batt Cars and Lazy Jacks. That was a nice combo and made handling the sail pretty easy. I single handed “Obsession” all the time. She had a 2GM20F Yanmar that ran well.

she also had a nice cockpit that could accommodate 6 people easily.

I found the H280 pretty maintenance-free…no teak to deal with outside.

If the cracked window doesn’t leak, I wouldn’t worry about it. Mine was cracked in about the same place.

If you wanted to replace it, you can probably take it out and have a new one made at a local plastic shop.

If you could see my face in this photo, I was smiling! A bit over-canvassed, but I didn’t want to top and drop the sail(I was racing the guy taking the photo).

Once i demoed a 21 sailboat to a sailor from hell. He was sailing the boat and put the mast in the water. Frightened everyone to include his wife. I took back control and headed in. He said he would never buy from my dealership. I said I would not sell him a boat as he was dangerous. His wife was scared to death and crying.

then I told him I would be a witness if she filed for divorce and then let him have it. They left as her skin tone was returning to normal.

years later, he came to my booth with his wife and children at a show. Not only did he apologize but thanked me for saving his marriage naming his son David after me. We shook hands and I sold a boat near cost with lessons to boot.
