Am moving from a 23.5 and am considering a 29.5. Are their any unique characteristics or values that are noteworthy for this particular year and model? I would be interested in any comments from current owners. Thanks!

Good move

Friend has one and it has lots of room below. That would be a good move from your present size boat. I went from 23.5 to 28.5 to 35.5, last 2 Hunters. The rig on the 29.5 is a little different. The main sail is huge with lots of "roach" and provides the bulk of the power. Small jib, 110% max. I believe, is there mainly to provide "slot" for wind. Most have the traveller at end of boom mounted to steering pedastal, handy, but takes some getting used to. Yanmar inboard diesel is bullet-proof and you'll love it. Check out "owner's reviews" on this site, great information.

What was the thinking on these sails?

sail plan

The Hunter sail plan is about the same for all sizes of boat. Your 23.5 had the same set up. Big main small jib. The sail plan is very well suited to the backstay free Hunter B & R rig.

kenkindly1,

Not all Hunters have the same basic sail plan. I have a 25.5 that is a masthead rig and is foresail powered. Main is around 130 sq ft, gennoa is about 225 sq ft.

Hunter 29.5

Hi: I've had a 1995 Hunter 29.5 for two summers now. Great boat for a couple. Easy to sail. A bonus is my wife loves it and is never reluctent to go sailing. We have spent two weeks at a time and many weekends and find the size is great for us. We have been in some pretty awful sea conditions both motoring (wind directly on the nose and lots of distance to cover) and under sail. She handled these conditions great.

Scott!!!

Do this- On this website main page, go over to the tab that says "Boat Info.", on that tab pull down to "Owners Reviews" and click on that. Then select "29.5" from the selection of sizes. Went there for grins ;D and there are some great reviews, warts and all, to read through. Contrary to what "kenkindly" said, Hunters from different eras have VERY different sailplans. Read the reviews,Ed Collins,Russell Eichman,Robert Zolczer,Michael Fish,Jorge Cela, etc.

I am a believer of Bob our 1994 Hunter 29.5 What a great boat for the $$$$ I reef at 14 knots and still the catalina's have a time catching Bob. Yes I would recomend

We are happy with ours!

I bought a 1995 29.5 last August, my wife never having been on a sailboat. We were able to get 7 weekends on the Chesapeake, and not sure I'll ever get my wife back on our 20' Boston Whaler. Definitely have to reef sooner than I ever did with other boats. Love the low maintenance on deck (SS vs teak handrails). We love the layout below and the cockpit layout, particularly compared against Catalina's of similar size. I had 2 bruised knees going around the wheel just inspecting the Catalina's! Perfect for a romantic couple for a weekend, and we've had 2 couples on board for several weekends with plenty of room. Great buy for the money.
