Looking at a 1983 Oday 28

I am going out today to have a serious look at an oday 28. From reading the reviews the 1983 model seems to be a good choice. In a boat of this age is there anything specific I should be watching for. I will of course get it surveyed before finalizeing the purchase. Its my first sail boat and we are new to the sport having completed Offshores fast track to cruising last year. You can email me direct if you wish as well as post. I think that the O'Day 28 is a great choice. I see one on a mooring on the river where our club is located and this boat has beautiful lines. I would suspect that it has a full keel with a spade rudder because this particular boat has no outboard rudder, but it has a tiller. The only thing that you may want to check if possible, is the rudder blade. One of the guys in my club bought an older O'Day 27 with a damaged rudder blade, which he was able to repair himself. Hopefully, the boat you're going to look at has an inboard diesel engine. Some of the inboards in these O'Day sailboats had gasoline driven 2 stroke sail drive engines, which I've never been too fond of. I really don't know a lot about the 28 except that it is set up very similar to my 86 O'Day 222 as far as the running rigging is concerned and I like that in a larger boat as opposed to the O'Day 272 LE which is a beautiful boat also, but not my cup of tea. I wish you luck in your choice.

Since you state a low level of experience -- spend $300-500 more or less for marine survey.

O'Day made reasonably good boats, however, old boats need constant care and maintenance. A reputable surveyor will be able to tell you the facts and prepare a to-do list.

Older boats often have hidden water damage. This problem is typical of O'Day boats. Just ask Keith.

A surveyor will be able to find if the boat you are looking is sound or has hidden warts. As a rookie, it will money well spent.

I've owned a 1985 28' O'Day for four seasons and absolutely love it. The Universal Diesel ,M12, is a little underpowered for the boat and she doesn't back to starboard very well but she does well on all other points.
