I am contemplating the purchase of a 27' hunter 1979. I few questions: -has anyone stepped the mast with the help of a friend or two? HOw? -this one has a 8hp yanmar. Is this too underpowered? -what are some of the common downfalls of the boat that I should look for. The yanmar is the original diesel. It appears to have been cared for. should I expect to have to replace it soon? thanks!

2+ crane for the mast

My wife and I have handled taking down, or stepping the mast several times. It was a big advantage to help someone else with their mast before doing ours - to see the oder of operations, and issues to prepare for. The Yanmar 8 hp is fine for getting in and out of the harbor, and cruising when the wind is too light. We do 4-5 knots on her in that condition. There is no reason to suspect replacement based on wear and tear. If no problems are seen on survey it's still good for years. (Our '77 Yanmar is still going great guns.) I have sustained 3.5 knots into four footers, but would look for more power if I had to buck currents over 3 knots to negotiate the harbor. (We have no current in most Lake Erie harbors.) They are great boats - but be sure to get a really good survey, since all boats of this age have some deterioration somewhere. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

Should be fine power-wise

John We own a 1982 Hunter 27 (aka Cherubini Hunter) and it has the Yanmar 1GM 6.5 horsepower diesel. We think the 6.5 hp is a bit underpowered, but I would bet that the 8 hp would be almost perfect without going overboard. If that engine appears to be well cared for, it should run for years. As for the mast, can't help you, ours was attached upright when we bought it! :) Take care, Ron Vanderveer Melbourne, Florida
