Am looking to repace the existing lifeline stanchion/ stachion bases on my 28.5. Existing ones are jury rigged replacements installed after the complete toerail was replaced on boat by previous owner using a toerails from a hunter 33. These do not have proper base fittings to fit into, and just have a flat metal tab fastened near the bottom with bolts going through from the toerail side. This is not solid enough to be trusted, plus the angle bracket that is through bolted to the deck is causing stress fractures damaging the deck!! What is original equipment like? And where can I get original/after market bases to adapt to these stanchions?? Any ideas out there? Thanks Eric Grant S/V Starry Night

Check Tidewater Marina Md. in the Dealer section. They had replacement stanchions in there store a few weeks back.

28.5 stanchions

The stanchions you describe appear to be the original ones for a 28.5. There should be a bolt that goes up into the stanchion tube itself from underneath the deck/hull flange,in addition to the metal tab and and the small angle bracket which is screwed into a backing plate under the deck. Yes, just about every one of these boats seems to have cracks around the angle piece due to people pulling on them or the bracket is broken away from the stanchion. This is a very poor design. If you replace them, make sure that you determine where the deck coring stops along the outward edge. The coring does not go out all the way to the edge. You will have to set the new stanchion bases inboard further than you might expect. With a little bit of dexterity, and luck, you might be able to fit a steel or fiberglass plate between the deck and the liner which does not appear to be epoxied together. Then I would thru bolt all the way through the the liner with a large backing plate added inside. This is a major design flaw but in all honesty it is the only major one, from a structural aspect, that I would complain about from the 28.5. Stanchions and bases can be found in all the major catalogues or advertisements in the various magazines. Good luck with this project. Jeff
