Update: ordered a new stud and 2 ft of 1/4 wire, able to get the port upper shroud untangled and used wire clamps to put them together.fashioned a temporary back stay and am currently waiting for parts to come in from defender, replacing the 2 bottom legs on the split backstay.found a machine shop locally that presses the wire and fittings for me.so far so good.

This angst over motoring seems quite misplaced. We motored from Chicago to Mobile with the mast sent ahead on a truck. Hundreds of sailboats do it every year, the low bridges make it mandatory. Absolutely zero problems.
Some boats dont have any mast and sails at all!!!!!

I'm thinking...Chicago to Mobile is a heck of a long way under motor... Chicago, TX - who knew?
Anyway, glad all worked out for you.
