Longitudinal prop crack

Just thought Id share a couple of photo of a 12rh9 two blade prop with a longitudinal crack full depth of the prop hub. This was swapped out by the previous owner just before closing ...only just noticed this crack. Probably now a case of 'buyer beware' and my issue to deal with. What is the significance of the brass dot - is that an attempt at a previous repair? Im just wondering how long this would have lasted in this condition.

Ouch . That can be ground out and brazed . It's not the end of the world and is certainly cheaper than a new prop .

Remove prop and take it to a prop repair facility
If you can't drop in at least contact them with your photographs and quires.
This is where you need to deal with professionals.
That said, my (unprofessional) guess is that that prop is past it.
The amount that would be needed to be grounded out to braze the crack would distort the propellers profile severely.
I hope you are pleasantly surprised.

The prop nut has, at some time, had the beejesus torqued out of it with enough force to split the hub.

I'm not enthused about grinding out and brazing the hub because this is a very high stress area as evidenced by the current damage. And as @garymalmgren points out, all that heat in brazing is going to distort the profile. This fix may well be more expensive than a new prop and will, most certainly not be as reliable as a new prop.

This was swapped out by the previous owner just before closing ...only just noticed this crack.

Do I understand you to say that you suspect this failed prop was substituted for the original prop which was on the boat when you inspected it ? If you have any proof of the swap, I'd certainly be pursuing him in small claims court. Unfortunately, this will cost a few boat bucks.

Looks like an opportunity to upgrade! The previous owner might make it right, call him and give him the opportunity. The previous owner of my boat helped me out after the sale, I didn't even ask I just mentioned the damage.

a 13X8 RH would work .. ya have to know your prop shaft diameter.. to go forward.
For new, consider Cambell Sailor .. call them for a recommendation.

I’m a great believer in Campbell Sailor props. Had them on two boats. Are you at Crescent Beach in B.C.?

He PK123 Sure looks like you are having your challenges with your old new to you boat. The first picture you shared back in October gave us all a clear understanding of galvanic corrosion.

It would be guessing to say what caused the crack. The sanded off "round" thing on the hub could have been a bolt screwed into the prop hub to halt the progression of the crack. That appears to have failed, as the crack proceeds right around the bolt. Or it may have been an attempt to secure the hub to the shaft.

Your question about what to do now.... Depends on you. Will you be happy powering through the Tidal Rapids of the Salish Sea knowing you have a cracked hub on your prop?

Certainly some have done that.

If I was sticking with the boat, I would put on a replacement prop.

Thanks jssailem, thankfully this is a the tail end of a 'head to toe' getting the boat into order. Pretty sure Ill end up going the replacement prop route and West by North look excellent local resource.

I keep my first bigger boat there when I lived in Surrey. The boat before our current boat was on the hard there while I rebuilt the engine etc. Now we are just across the strait from you.

Michael, you'll know all about moorage at Crescent Beach Marina being beyond rare! ...we were just lucky to be in the right place at the right time ...actually walking our dog past that tiny sales board at the head of the launch ramp and noticed for the only time in about 5 years that there was a sailboat just come up for sale AND with assumable moorage .That just never happens ...the guy we bought the boat from was a CB tenant for over 30 years!. We were thinking of moving out to Salt Spring (theres a house in Long Harbour with a private sheltered moorage slip on a 50 year lease - very tempting) ....but the admiral say she wants to be on the lower mainland to get to family ...so looks like Crescent Beach is home for the foreseeable future!

That’s understandable but the other argument is you are denying the family a holiday place in the islands……such a hard decision! I must admit that grandchildren scuppered my vision of sailing the world.
