My volvo md11c uses the same oil filter as my truck. I like Fram filters and use them on all of my vehicles cars, boats, motorcycles and truck. As I was messing around in the garage I found another oil filter from my old truck. It is a few inches longer than my current filter but the same diameter and fitting. Question....would there be any down side to using a longer filter for more filter area and maybe a little oil cooling???? Anyone using a longer than standard oil filter.

Nope!

the bigger the filter the better. PS; Next time your at a Napa auto store. Compare the cutaway that they have on display comparing filters , you will change your mind.

It will seriously interfer with hand cranking the engine.

And it holds more oil so check the oil after you run for a few minutes.

Filters

An often debated issue - whether to stick to brand OEM parts or use cheaper knock-offs. For the savings involved, I never saw any "value" is tempting fate although I'm sure there are many who have successfully done so. One fundamantal difference between filters is the size and rating of the pressure relief valve which serves to bypass the filter if it ever clogs. You might want to consider what if any difference there is between the valve rating in what you use and this longer one. There are also a few "studies" you can find with a simple internet search which compared various filters but as always, one needs to be aware of the author's or auto store's objectivity.

They make a special crank with curve!

So, now that the crank issues is settled, IMHO should not be a problem.

Moon, bigger would be better but by

a millionth. Nowadays, crankcase oil rating is so good (API-SM) that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. I use a premium filter but only because it is a dollar more than the regular filter at the co-op store that I go to (total of $5). With timely oil changes, cars go 300-400 thousand miles or more. Some part stores have catalogs that have the dimensions of each filter number including the size and pitch of the threaded hole and dimension of the rubber seal. The best filter I've ever seen was the premium Baldwin filter which had a wound cotton medium. They discontinued those and now offer only pleated paper filters due to lack of interest in the premium filters.

No problem using longer filters that seat

properly but they will not provide any measurable benefits. Black oil from a diesel engine shows that dirty oil is hardly a problem. The serious concern about oil is breakdown in viscocity due to heat and contamination.

A lot of Smoke and Mirrors

I googled oil filter quality and there seems to be a lot of debate!!!! I've always used fram but I've always changed my oil frequently with a new filter each time. I will try the longer filter and may even use one one my truck. They cost the same as the shorter filter . My engine does not have a hand crank so that is not an issue. There seems to be plenty of room on the side of the engine for a longer filter. I gnashed my teeth a lot when deciding to use fram filters on my new Goldwing...well it was used but less than 1000 miles. Honda wanted over $15 for their filter. Fram was less than $3 at the time. I put over 60,000 miles on that goldwing with no problems. We put over 130,000 on a Nissan sentra using fram filters and my toyota truck has 100,000 with no problems using fram filters. Unfortunately there seems to be no unbiased comparison on the internet. Then even if there are quality differences you have to do a cost benefit comparison to decide if buying a filter that costs 2-3X what a fram costs significantly improves engine life/performance. My logic is cheaper oil changes means more frequent oil changes.

My boat diesel is one cylinder and my car engine

is six cylinder. The oil capacity in the former is 1 quatr and in the latter 4 quarts the oil filter for the car is not 4 times as large as the oil filter for the small diesel. Maybe the maker knows something that we are missing.
