I just figured out why I could never get rid of those annoying little scallops at the hanks. The jib luff is too long. The rope splice on the snap shackle att he head of the jib jams in the slot at the top of the mast. No matter how hard I pull on the halyard, the tension never gets to the jib luff. Has anyone ever had this problem? If so, what do I do: a) get a new halyard (I'm about due), in which case I would have to get small diameter line so the splice can run past the slot and into the mast? Is 5/16" too small? 3/8"? b) rig a jib downhaul at the tack? how? c) shorten the pennant in the anchor locker? I wonder about b) and c) because the foot of the sail is just off the deck. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Peter S/V Raven

Peter, Check out

My photo forum post on 23 stuff. 1 or 2 of the photos are of what I'm calling "adjustable jib tack". It's really a jib down haul but in this croud, I really didn't want to go through the "stuff" of explaining what a "down haul" really is. Any way, give it a look. It does work very well and will solve your problem and open up some options in other situations. Greg

Possibly "C"

Peter, On my 23, the jib tack at the anchor locker just barely rubs on the anchor locker doors. You might need to adjust the pennant shorter. My pennant is only about 6 yo 8 inches long if I am thinking correctly.

Mast Position?

I was curious if you have adjusted the mast to decrease some of the infamous weather helm. If so, perhaps your observed luff distance is a consequence of taking out some of the mast rake. By moving the mast forward the forstay is shortened and thus the luff distance is also shortened. However, I'm not sure adding more mast rake (creating additional weather helm) is a preferred solution to your problem. Greg Hartgraves S/V Paradise

Thank you all

Well it looks like it's time for a new jib halyard, in fact I just ordered 130 feet of 5/16" Sta-Set X for jib and main halyards, so the answer is "A". It was the least expensive solution, and besides my halyards were getting a little ratty. Greg H., I think you may be right, in which case I became a victim of my own success. Oh well. Some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you. Steve, I think the shackle connecting the jib tack to the tack pendant may be too long. I recently bought a new one with a captive pin after I lost the pin from the original shackle overboard one night. I think the old one may have been shorter but I can't remember too well because I threw it overboard in disgust right after I lost the pin. Greg S, I looked at your modifications on Faster...very impressive. I have a couple of tricks on Raven that may help you too. I just have to remember to take the camera next time. Now that this jib halyard thing seems to be licked, I am moving on solving ventilation problems. Have a good weekend, all! Peter S/V Sauna...sorry...Raven
