Long Trips

We just bought a Vega 1969 a couple years ago. We just had done
sailing in around the East Coast. With the Vega being a small boat I
was wondering how do you prepare for long over seas trips. I was
wondering about water supplies? Plus has anyone in this group Ocean
crossings? In four years my husband is retiring and we are going to
live on board for a few years.And we are looking at doing long

I did an Atlantic crossing from Florida to Spain in
2005 in a Vega and took extra water in four solid 5
gallon jerry cans and four 5 gallon collapsible water
jugs (they can be found in some Walmarts and camping
or hardware stores). This was as well as our 15
gallon water tank.

This was about double the amount of water we needed,
but we were grateful of the extra gallons as when half
our supply got contaminated and made us quite ill we
still had a lot of uncontaminated water left.
Splitting the water up into several jerry cans is
annoying (we had the collapsible ones in the companion
way until we used them), but it does mean that if your
main tank gets contaminated or leaks, you've still got
plenty left. Our water got contaminated after we
topped up the last few cans just before heading out of
Bermuda and so I'd advise that you at least two
different supplies to fill separate containers, even
if the supply is supposedly ok (as with our
experience). Also, we took some water purification
tablets, which meant we could still use the
contaminated water if we really had to, especially for
things like tea where it's also been boiled. We also
had separate 2 litre bottles of bottled water for the
grab bag, in case we didn't have time to through a
jerry can over.
