Good morning - I will be away from my boat for a year maybe two, and wanted to therefore save the $400/month I pay in slip fees. So I have 2 questions. 1) The cheapest land, and therefore i assume the cheapest storage is inland, but in california inland is desert. Will moving my boat from the ocean to such a dry environment potentialy damage my boat. 2) Does anyone know of a storage facility they would reccomend in Sothern California? (preferably one where people could access and work on the boat if I wanted to have things done - replace through hulls etc.) thanks in advance, christopher

If your boat has a wooden hull two years

in the desert will be harmful. But if it has a fiberglass hull two years in the desert won't hurt. Can you take it to a bank and borrow $5000 and insist that they take it as collateral? Then they can store it in a secure facility and you can invest the $5000 and the cost to you will be the interest on the loan for 2 years or less.

There Are Some Advertised In Wilmington

...as I recall. Check the Log ads and look in the boater's directories. The yards will also know where to look. You may want to consider a cover. In any event, you will want some ventilation and look up some hints on the various boat systems for storage. However, the cost of de-rigging and re-rigging and transport may eat up any savings. Boat storage

Since you are in Long Beach, you might want to check with Colonial Yacht Anchorage in Wilmington. It has dry storage and because is it also a boatyard they can get it out of the water for you and move it across the street to the storage facility. I don't know what the charges are, but you can weigh that against the very large expense of moving your 34 ft. boat inland. Just a thought.
