Long Shaft 4 O'day 22?

I couldn't get out thru the extended channel from Alligater Creek into Charlotte Harbour, Punta Gorda, a strong west wind had built up waves large enuff to lift my old Evenrude 9.9 short shaft out of the water, as you all know I had no steerage. Needless to say, I had to turn around in that narrow channel, as I turned another sailboat emerged from behind the mangroves, seen me turn around & and they also turned back for the marina.
After that experience is when I learned I needed a long shaft. Also, another day, I got caught on a strong out going tide on the harbor side of Boca Grande pass and had to wait for the tide to change, at 2 AM, to get back to the marina.
Like hear some info on long shaft motors w/ generaters and experience w/ different models and where to buy.

I have a Tohatsu 9.8 ultra long shaft on an O23. I think it's too much engine as it hits hull speed at half throttle. The ultra long is too long as I have to both raise the mount and lift the enginge to get it out of the water. It's also so heavy that the boat doesn't sit flat on the water.

I should sell it and get something smaller.

My friend bought a Tohatsu 9.4 extra long shaft outboard for his Seaward 22 a couple of years ago and he likes it. It's a nice quiet engine and it pushes his boat right along with very little effort. You can see that stream of water from the water pump pretty clearly as it squirts out the back of the lower case. It has the electric start and the charging system. A nice engine.
I like my 1999 Johnson 8hp long shaft two stroke outboard. It has the pull start and the charging system. It's been a very reliable outboard since I've owned it. I plan on keeping it going for as long as I can.

That's what I said, it's over powered for this boat. When you hit hull speed at half open throttle, that's it. It's very hard to get a low speed when you need it especially with the idle problems caused by ethanol in the gas.

I sure do like those features, but they are available on smaller engines.

I like my 1999 Johnson 8hp long shaft two stroke outboard. It has the pull start and the charging system. It's been a very reliable outboard since I've owned it. I plan on keeping it going for as long as I can.

8HP might be a better size for me.

I have a brand new tohatsu 6 hp " prosail". Hast the generator, long shaft etc On my 26. I think I'm underpowered. Just put it on this fall. Should we work a trade?

To address the original question, I got mine off the Internet, something like outboardsonline. They r out of Tennessee. If you google tohatsu outboard motors Tennessee it should pop up. Lowest
Prices I could find. But it is still recommended that you get it serviced and tuned up out of the crate before you run it. I had that done for around 35$ local marine shop.

That's what you want though. You don't want to have to run your outboard at full speed all the time. You could probably get away with an 8 hp on your boat.
I would keep the Tohatsu. Your next engine might be a lemon. My friend David bought a new Honda for his Boston Whaler and had nothing but problems with it.
The only thing I don't like about the 9.9 is the weight of the engine and I wouldn't need the electric start. Outside of that, they're pretty nice engines.
Every year I store my outboard down the cellar and the Johnson 8 is heavy enough for my liking.
