My outboard is stolen and I never even thought was it long shaft or short. I bought the boat with motor (Nissan 2004, 8H.P.) Please help me. What length I need for Hunter 240

By the way I am in Bradenton Fl now and looking for outboard. Is electric motor a good idea? Did anybody tried it for this size of. a boat (Hunter 240) ? How powerful it must be?
Thanks for advice

You want a long shaft

I highly recommend the Tohatsu 6HP SailPro.

It comes in long (20”) or extra long(25”). It has a high thrust prop and gear ratio and an alternator to top off the batteries. I have one on my hunter 26 and i like it better than the Honda 9.9 I used to have on the boat.

Does that OB have a reverse gear? Apologies if it's a silly question, still plowing through my research...

Yes and it has a 6 Amp alternator. Starts on the first pull almost every time. Maybe two pulls if it has been sitting all winter. I only use ethanol free gas and I unplug the fuel line and let the engine run dry each time.... that is not unique to the Tohatsu just a good practice with these small OBs

I can also get to hull speed at 3/4 throttle so I still have a little reserve for those days when I'm pushing a headwind.

Extra long (25") shaft is what I went with have not regretted it even once.
Long shaft (20") is the minimum.

With the XL shaft I can motor sail on either tack and when it starts to hobby horse as it gets in choppy water it does not cavitate or pop out of the water like the L model did.

Interesting, thanks all. I've got a line on a legitmate candidate boat, so I'm trying to familiarize myself with the world of outboards. Sounds like this little 6hp has plenty of fans.

Would it be enough for something in the 24-29 foot range?

24 to 26 for sure... at 29 I’d probably want a 9.9hp

I use to be a Tohatsu/Nissan dealer besides being a sailboat dealer. Size of motor depends on the boat. Sorry @rgranger but I partially disagree with you. By the way is your boat in the water?
