A friend and I will be sailing/motoring a 30 foot with an 18 hp motor from Long Island Sound to the Raritan Bay this April. I have never sailed through Hell Gate nor has my friend and acccording to a post on 2-2-03, on this web site, there was talk about the critical time to enter Hell Gate. My question is, at what time, and where in regard to high or ebb tide should one be, coming from the Long Island Sound entering Hell Gate. Also, at what point does the current or tide start to change direction toward the Long Island Sound. Thank You

What's Hell Gate?

Scott, Sorry for the dumb question, but I've sailed the eastern half of LI Sound & I've never heard of the place. Are you talking about The Race? Some place near NYC? Just curious. Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Hells gate is where the LI Sound Dumps into NYC

Its at the very tip of the East River where the Harlem river meets . It has a lot of current with the tide flushing in and out of NY Harbor and the Long Island Sound. Its at the other end from "the race". For times and tide chart, Just buy an Eldridge Tide book. It has everything you need. Also do a search for "East River" or "Hell's Gate" in the archives

Hell's Gate

There is alot of commercial traffic... barges in tow. You MUST monitor the commercial VHF channels to keep tract of where those vessels are. Some of the turns are blind. You need to know what is coming.
