Does anyone have suggestions for destinations close to NYC harbor and on the south shore of LI?

Give any thought to

The Sandy Hook area of New Jersey? There are anchorages at horse shoe cove, and marinas in the various rivers to the south and south east of the hook just off Raritan Bay. That area is just a few hours from the harbour. Good luck!

I guess if you really wanted to, you could

go into Sheepshead bay which is also not far from NY Harbor. You can pick up moorings there from the Local Yacht Club

how far is far?

how far from NYC are you interested in going? there are places at each of the south shore inlets, but that means being out in the big 'o' as you travel east. after brooklyn there are four usable inlets going as far as shinnecock - some trickier than others. the best and most fun area is inside fire island inlet because you have the entire great south bay ports as well as fire island. anchoring and getting ashore at fire island is a challenge, but it can be done.

NY Harbor

There's Liberty Landing MArina in Jersey City, directly across the Harbor from Manhattan. 79th St Boat Basin (Up the Hudson a few miles) Moorings are $15 a night (need your own pennants) and a dink if you want to go ashore. Ther is an anchorage just south of the Statue of Liberty (It was closed after 9/11 but I believe that it might have been reopened for sailboats...not sure) Larchmont is close.

Horseshoe Cove

I tried Horseshoe cove which was nice but a little tricky to get into, the best approach is from the south. There are a ton of old submerged piers that you have to be careful of, but if you stay in the channel its fine. I plan on making that a regular stop!
