Has anyone installed a traveler that spans the cockpit of a Hunter 260/270 ?? My 2002 Hunter 270 came with a short traveler installed just in front of the companionway. It is better than nothing but I would like to install a longer traveler that would be more effective. I am planning on making one from oak reinforced with fiberglass that would go across the cockpit just above the current traveler. I am planning on fastening it with wing nuts just underneath the plastic cup holder/step on the coaming. I would be able to reach inside the "pocket" or shelf to tighten/undo the wing nuts. I am planning on reinforcing the area with glass fiber & microballons where the bolts go through.

I see you bring this up again but Dave was correct to go back to the old thread. Basically, the only place for a traveler is on the cockpit coaming in front of the companionway which would be short and really no advantage as anywhere else is simply in the way. As for an archl, there were reasons why it was not incorporated. If you want an arch, you will pay the price for one but engineering will be another issue to make it work.
As for sailing, the Hunter 260 and 270 did not need a traveler as this boat was raced competively by me winning races even against the best. FYI, I was involved with the design of this boat and sold nearly 20 to 25 percent of the entire production line for both boats.

Another view of these boats is that Hunter did not design them for performance. Shaping the main with a traveler returns small gain.
The primary emphasis of these water ballast boats was for the crusing sailor and the ease of stepping the mast, large room inside/outside and loading onto the trailer as I was invloved with these boats. Cephius is correct. However, I did effectively race them and surprised many when I came in first. The design of the boat is one factor but other factors do include, condition of boat, knowledge of the sailing area, knowledge of sailing/racing by the skipper and of course interaction with the crew. If you have all this going for you, you can be competitive.
