Currently we sail our 2000 Hunter 290 on the northern Chesapeake Bay. Next season we were planning on spending the summer in Long Beach Island, NJ. Can anyone recommend any Marinas that cater to Sailboats? How is the sailing on Barnegat Bay? Any information you could provide on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robert

Long Beach Island - LBI

There are some Marinas on LBI but it depends where you want to go: South of causeway: Shallow water and mostly powerboaters north of the causeway: Deeper waters, more sailors. There is a marina on the Mainland, just a few miles north of the causeway, called Mariners Marina that has plenty of deep water and caters mostly to sailors. Very nice place! Barnegat Bay can be shallow but it has constant breezes, you won't disappointed

LBI

Most of the marinas along LBI are small and are relatively shallow. The best ones for sailboats are Morrison's Marina in Beach Haven and another one just south of there (Beach Haven Yatch Club?). Call for reservations. At the north end of the island, High Bar Harbor Marina, just inside the inlet is nice but remote unless you have a car or Bike. The lower end of the bay averages 10 feet most of the time and has great sailing. Be sure to visit Tices shoal where you can go ashore and walk over to the ocean beach; Captain's Inn in Forked River for dinner or overnight; breakfast or lunch at Cape Island Marina south of Waretown. - See NOAA chart 12324. If you sail north of buoy #40, stay to the west and in the channel. Fair Winds.

Don't miss Forked River

I agree with the 2 previous posts and would also add that you visit Forked River; just north of the west end of Oyster Creek channel which connects Barnegat Inlet with the west coast of the bay. There are transient docks at The Captain's Inn which has an outdoor bar near the docks, as well as a popular restaurant; there is Southwinds Marina which has a pool, restaurant and gas dock (full facilities) and there is also a very pretty state-owned marina at the very end of the north fork. Dockage is $0.75/foot, with very nice shower facilities, and from there, you can walk 2 blocks to one of our favorite restaurants, the Forked River House. As one other post mentioned, don't miss Tice's Shoal, southeast of ICW #40, along the west side of the barrier island which comprises New Jersey's "Island Beach State Park"; dinghy in to the boardwalk which leads you to a beautiful ocean beach (5-7 minute walk). During the day, there will be maybe a hundred boats anchored there, but at night, only a handful remain and it's glorious. At ICW #35, just south of the Route 37/Toms River Bridge, visit the Toms River; this is where I keep my boat. At the head of the river is the Lobster Shanty, a popular restaurant with somewhat limited guest dockage. There are numerous anchorages along the river, and check out Island Heights, a victorian village on the north shore just past the last entrance buoys. If you're around in September, they have a "Sailfest" which is a great street fair with merchants, antique cars, arts and crafts, sailboat races, food, etc. I can give you lots of additional information about Barnegat Bay, including destinations north of Toms River, so please feel free to e-mail me for more information if you would like, @ robertclasalle@cs.com

In the town of Barnegat....

which is on the mainland directly west of Barnaget Lighthouse, and south of the Forked River area referred to above. Last time I was by there was a couple of years ago, but it was a very nice, modern, well kept, family run, predominately sailboat marina called Mariner's Marina. Sheltered area, quick access to the bay, and you don't have to do the drive onto the island to get to your boat.

Fond memories

I just want to say that reading the couple of post on Forked River, brought back a lot of fond memories. As a kid growing up we always spent our summer vacation at my Grandmother's summer house in Forked River. We never ate out at either the Forked River House or the Captain's Inn (not with 4 kids) but we always had a great time.
