Lockley Newport

A friend of mine was given one of these that has not been used in years. He can make do with the sails, but needs to make a centerboard and tiller. Any ideas where to begin looking for appropriate dimensions? He measured the length (of the boat, of course)to be 11'1". Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

I had a 17'

I used to own a 1977 Lockley Newport 17. It was a great little boat with a small cuddy cabin. Good size for us until my son came along, then it got real small, real fast.As I recall the Lockley Newport made boats until the early 80's. They were built in Gloucester, VA I believe. Maybe someone in Gloucester can track down some info for you.For the rudder, you could probably copy one from a similar sized boat of another brand and build one from plywood and epoxy. The centerboard will be trickier. Mine was cast iron and stored inside the trunk. I guess the size of the trunk would help define the size of the c'board.Good luck. The 17 was a sweet sailing boat.

I had a 17' also.

Tillet Marine in Manteo, NC was a Newport dealer, and had an iventory of parts for a long time after they went out of production. It has been a long time since I had my Newport and I don't know whether they (Tillet)are still in business, or if so, whether they still have parts, but it is worth checking out.
