Stern box

We placed ours in the stern box (under the seat) The reason being it is easy to access when on your own and the battery is also located there. We fitted a false floor above the fuel tank. It is all sealed up for safety. Servicing the battery is now much easier. The antennae is attached to the pushpit. We get outstanding coverage. The extra cable needed to go to the top of the mast and subsequent loss in power meant the short cable to the stern rail was a good choice. Here in Australia we can now get these radios that are pretty well water proof. If they had been available when we fitted our radio I would have gone for one of those cuting a slot in the side of the stern box for fitting. Having to open the lid to talk at times is a hassle but generaly OK. These water proof radios also come with a remote so locating in the cabin is now a real option. At the end of the day being able to get to the radio when you are on your own was our number one requirement.

VHF

We mounted ours in the cabin below the bulkhead aft of the galley. This is just below the electric panel and power was easy to get. The antenna is masthead, with the cable run thru the mast to a connector at the base of the mast. (near the light connection) The cable is then run thru the deck, inside the headliner back to the radio. (dealer installed the antenna.) I have seen others installed in the ceiling above the table, but seems too easy to hit your head. The location of the radio is convenient to the cockpit. But of course you can't hear it from the helm. We then added the RAM microphone/remote mounted in the aft of the cockpit on the side of the starboard seat. It is water resistant and you can hear it and use it from the helm. (we have the tiller) Our range seems to be 20 miles if no obstruction.

Aft of compression post

We put ours just aft of the compression post facing aft. We mounted the mic right next to it and have yet to hit our heads. For access in the cockpit, we also installed the RAM remote mic in the aft end of the starboard seat. This is also the location of our elec start and engine guages. The antenna goes from the mast head, down the mast and exits the base of the mast and goes thru a "removable" watertight thru hull fitting. I was worried about this fitting, since I had never seen one, but it works great, even on spray downs when cleaning topsides. When lowering the mast, we just unplug the connector from the radio, remove the thru hull fitting and pull out the wire. The fitting has a water tight plug that goes in it when the wire is out.

Jay, the removable watertight fitting....

...can you provide a picture, or a description, or both? Also do you have a source to buy one? Thanks Tom

It's a NewMar "Thru-Dex" waterproof cable fitting

It is a NewMar Thru-Dex Waterproof Cable Fitting. They have three models: CCX-R for large radar plugs; CCX-S for small radar plugs; and CCX-T for PL-259, BNC,Wind Instruments, Loran, and GPS. The last is the one I have. I happen to have the packaging in front of me, so here is all their info: NewMar U.S.A. P.O. Box 1306 Newport Beach, CA 92663 714-751-0488 Fax 714-957-1621 www.newmarpower.com I found mine while wandering around Boat US in Baltimore, MD. I wasn't planning on buying anything either. No, really, I wasn't. -Jay
