Location of pad eye for A-Sym

I am once again considering the purchase of an Assymetrical Spinnaker for my Catalina 310. My 310 did not come with the optional pad eyes installed on the deck forward of the pulpit flanges (according to my owners manual DWG's).

I have considered various options in the past including a short track mounted on the toerail and foot blocks mounted horizontally on deck (like the 309).

On the 310's that came from the factory with the pad-eyes installed is the pad-eye throughbolted to the accomodations in the aft cabin?

When I run my Asym I run a twing line to the cleat from the snatch block.
The twing line is secured to the cleat just like you would secure the dock line, one on each side.
I use the same snatch block for both sides.

Thank you for the pictures! Last year another kind soul referred to Twing lines. I had a hard time visualizing it. Somehow I was thinking that the twing lines acted more like foot blocks to change slightly the fleet angle of the spinnaker sheets to a block on deck whereupon it would be made up to the primary winch.

I hope you had lots of free beer and food in B.C. last night! Polls here in Canada have indicated that most Canadians were ambivalent towards how many medals we won in the various events; except for hockey of course.

PaulJ, Did I miss something? I thought the question was about an eye on the bow pulpit to attach the spinnaker to.

I also considered installing padeyes like the manual shows for a symmetrical spinnaker I inherited from another boat. I never got around to it, and decided to just run the sheet (and guy) under the middle of the cleat (I use the foreward cleat in a similar manner for the spin pole downhall). There is some added friction, but not a problem because if it is pulling very hard I have on the winch anyway. After living with it like this a few seasons, I have decided not to add any turning blocks. You could always try it yourself and see if it is to much friction for you.

You have jib sheet turning blocks on your 310!!!??? Did you add them or were they factory? What hull #? One of the biggest screwups in the model change from 320 to 310... my port sheet rubs on the coaming

I got a couple of rail clamps from I attached them low to the front swept back rail on the pushpit. With a spring loaded block, it frees the stern cleat and has lots of strength for an asymmetric. I wouldnt try it on a guy on a symmetric however...

On the bow of the boat there is an anchor roller.
On the port side of the anchor upright flange there is one 3/8" hole.
This hole Catalina designates as a tack bock attachment point for Asy and Sym spinnaker.
Is this what you are looking for?

Paulj - Your neighbor in Tacoma here. Tell us more about your Assym (and roller rig)? I am starting to do a little racing (seriously) with my 310. Currently, no flying sails, but want to eventually get a kite. I have a pole, so lean towards a std spinnaker, but cannot yet make a final decision (OK, money is part of it, but only PART). Would really enjoy hearing your expeeriences and opinions.

Maybe we can rendezvous sometime? Should be up in the San Juans sometime this summer.

Poor Mans Blocks

Not a factory as rail clamps, but they work for me.

Actually, they have worked very well with the drifter. I am looking for a learning spinnaker (prefer Symmetric over Asymmetric), but the block I have should work find. I also have two lines so I can tack the drifter if I need to.

PaulJ, I like your pictures, as I was just not getting what you were saying till I saw them. You just added another item to my to do list.
