Location of outboard starter switch

I have a '92' Hunter 27 with a 9 hp electric start outboard with pedestal steering. My problem is the starter/choke switch is located about 1" up from the floor on the stern cockpit seat on the port side. The location is in a real bad position where the key has been broken off by stepping on it by accident - multiple times, even once by me. Where is the usual place for the starter switch or a place where it makes sense? The throttle is built in the pedestal. I have a guard, but I am not sure if the switch should be mounted on the guard. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

On the deisil model

My 93 h27 has an inboard engine. The key is where you describe on the port side, but is recessed and has a partial plexiglass cover to protect it from the danger you describe. Maybe you could recess yours. I could take a picture and post it if you like ward
