Location of Fuel Tank for Outboard

I have a 1974 C22 that i picked up last year and fixing up for this season. It was brought to my attention that there is no fuel locker in the Lazarette. There is, however, a platform to place a portable fuel tank and secure it while sailing, but the lazarette is wide open to the cabin. In the absense of a fuel locker, or a below deck fuel tank, what are people doing with their portable fuel tanks for their outboards?

Note: This boat will have no electricity on board

That is just the way the original style was. The new style is in the same place, but it is walled off from the interior.
