Location of Batteries

We have a 1988 Hunter 28.5. One of our batteries is located in the lazerette and the other is located on the opposite side of the boat under the galley sink. The perko selector switch is located between these two in the guest stateroom. I was thinking of relocating the galley battery to the lazerette with the other battery for ease and better utilization of storage space. Is there any reason the battery has to be located in the galley and would there be any problem(s)or reasons why I shouldn't relocate it? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or comments.

Starboard List

I did exactly as you were thinking. Now my 28.5 has an obvious list to starboard, especially with a full tank of Diesel. I thought I would make use of that new empty space under the sink but to be honest, its not being used to its best potential. Allen

Battery

I put a 2 batt. system with charger in the lazerette and do not have an obvious list and enjoy knowing that I'm not breathing battery fumes all night long, aside from the fact that the open flames of the alchohol stove are not a scant 20" from these same battery fumes. Good luck.

#2 battery and switch

I put 2nd battery under the Lazarette up forward so the cable are as short as possible. I put the Perko switch high forward inside on the port side on the engine box. No listing here. Jim McCue

28.5 batteries

My 87' 28.5 which I've had for 3 years came with 2 batteries. One is under the galley sink on the floor and the other is on the top shelf under the 2-burners. Wiring is very simple, battery switch is located on the galley sink face facing starboard. Never had a problem with batteries or switch in their present locations.

Both of my batteries are in stbd lazarette, too

I've been told original equipment on the H285 was just one battery under the galley sink on the sole. On my 87, a previous owner moved it to the starboard lazarette, and added a second battery, along with a 1-2-Both-Off switch. He mounted them side by side. I think I would have mounted them fore & aft, as close to the centerline as possible. If my boat lists because of the side-by-side arrangement, it's imperceptible to me. BTW, that space under the galley sink appears to be big enough for the compressor for a ice box conversion refrigerator (like the Cold Machine). Eric Lorgus s/v Explorer 87H285

2 UNDER THE SINK

I put the second battery under the sink on top of the other battery, along with the selector switch. With the deseal fuel, hot water heater, and all the stuff I put in the starboard lazerette the boat already was listing to starboard. The batteries are a little tight but it is a good fit. Good luck.
