Sitex T180 w/ Sitex MRT-141, complete with cables and manuals. Anyone have any info on this unit and would it be worth $500. He says it is working and was recently removed from his boat. I've wanted to add radar to my boat. New lowend model would run me about 1k. Would that be better? Thanks

Why is it for Sale?

Find out why he is selling the unit. It is obviously a discontinued model, as I couldn't find a T180, only a T195. A friend had a Sitex radar on a previous boat, and I think he was happy with it (although he is not a techy guy).

New low end model

Without a doubt, a new low end model would be the better deal. Putting technical capabilities aside, lets just consider gambling $500 against a non-gamble $1,000. Radars and GPS's have become more or less high dollar throw-aways. Me personally, I would never gamble $500 dollars against $1,000. Assume you have a small problem, and assume you can still get parts and the repair comes out to $300. Now you have $800 invested in an older radar. thats only $200 less than a new unit, that is probably fr superior in performance. IMHO Tony B

You guys are right...

I guess I am trying to be frugal but I should know that the technology has changed a great deal. I reread the listing and he mentions the display is CRT. That would draw too much on my batteries. I think the wise course is to look for a low end unit with monochrome LCD. Mick, he probably upgraded to a better, newer unit. I think I'll just pass on this one. Thanks again.

Used vs New

I would never even consider paying that kind of money for a used radar. You can buy a new Furuno, 16 mile unit for under 1000 on ebay. They are on there quite often. Even if the older unit had a warranty, the technical advances in electronics, make anything more than a couple years old obsolete. For instance, all units now are LCD displays, which are much less power hungry the the CRT's of old. In my opinion, 500 bucks for a used radar, is no bargain at all.

Probably has a bad Magnetron. A new Furuno is a better investment. Tim R.

Yea...

Think I'll pass on the whole radar thing anyway. Research shows that the total cost of adding radar to my boat would be about 30% of what I paid for the boat. That in its self does not justify the project. Thanks again for everyone's insight.

cost of radar

Brian I'm assuming you are considering the radar as a safety tool. In that case, you may be making an incorrect comparison of cost for the radar vs. the boat. You might consider a better comparison - that being the cost of the radar compared with your life.

It is not a safety item...

But a "nice to have" item. I do not sail at night nor in the fog.
