Lobster Bake Hour......

Just wetting your whistles... This will be our first official "bake" of the 2012 season.. A bunchof couples anchored up here in a a beautiful and idyllic Maine anchorage ready to eat the tastiest bugs/lobsters you've ever had...

My five year old daughter Zozo & I went over to Tim R. and his wife's boat to borrow the "rocket dinghy" to go get "rocks" (out of drink ice already, 8 bags in two days) and to buy some lobsters straight off the boat. Of course as boats go nothing is ever simple or reliable. While zipping over to get some bugs & rocks the hub on the Nissan/Tohatsu motor spun free of the propeller. It was idle speed the rest of the way and we barely made it at that. Heck our Yamaha 2.5HP could have done that, as fast, had the hub not spun.

A quick call on the VHF and Tim R. was on his way in our dinghy, read SLOW, with a spare prop. He was deep into a project, he's installing a new auto-pilot, and I am certain was NOT happy about taking my tortuga of a dink 2+ miles to bring Zozo & I a spare prop. Heck we took his "rocket" dink to save time, so much for that effort.....


So pop quiz... Everyone here carries a SPARE DINGHY PROP, DON'T THEY... Tim R. does, and it saved he day...!!!!! UFB !!! Next time you guys laugh at the spares Tim, I or others carry think of the almost lost opportunity of a REAL MAINE LOBSTER BAKE with FRESH STRAIGHT OUT OF THE WATER MAINE LOBSTERS then re-consider your "spares" arsenal..... No Nissan/Tohatsu props around these parts on Sunday of Memorial day weekend except for Tim R's. on-board chandlery...... Preparedness, on Tim's part, saves the day!!!!

Now it is back to cocktail hour and the baking of fresh blueberry bread and corn bread to bring to the BEAUTIFUL island on which we will STEAM, never boil, our FRESH SHEDDERS (only tourists eat hard shells)......... Oh and I picked about 8 pounds of fresh muscles at low water this morning....:dance:

Sounds amazing! You have inspired me. I can't match the lobster while in the Chesapeake, but I will substitute crab, softshells, fresh mussels and a pot of beans and home smoked sausage. Cheers y'all!

Softshell crab isn't shedder lobster but it isn't bad.

Boiled some fresh louisiana shrimp 10-14 count and only $3.50 per lb. Went out to dinner night before last and had crabcake served on a bed of angel hair pasta with creamy crawfish sauce on top. This area is awesome for seafood. Lobster isn't local and very few exceptional dishes made with it. I heard about a fried oyster po-boy that take fried oysters, and toss with a sauce of reduced crystal hot sauce, white wine, and butter on real french bread. Sort of a new orleans answer to buffalo wings. I don't care much for oysters, but i can't get this sandwich out of my head.

I'm the king of spare everything (belts and suspender's) but you have me beat on the spare prop....glad all worked out and my mouth is watering reading about fresh bread and lobster

Both my old dink motors have shear pins instead of the slip hubs.. yes the shearpin spares (2) are attached inside the engine cowl.
Love the lobster when I am up there, but Forrest has the ticket for this area.. Have also harvested some fresh scallops on sand beds .. those things sauteed in butter and garlic (and a little basil and rosemary) and spread over pasta are pretty good .. ya make a little white roux first then the scallops then deglaze with a little white wine and reduce some before spreading on pasta.. yum

Mmmm... grilled Bratwurst with steamed onions on hard rolls from Sheboygan's City Bakery (although brats are not the same since Luedke's closed.. :-( )

I did finally get the AP installed Sunday and it works great. I am very happy with my new Garmin instrucments and AP. Everything works so nicely together on the NMEA 2000 bus. Now I just have to connect the chartplotter to the AP via NMEA 0183.

The lobsters and mussels were awesome. Good drink too.

Nice sail home yesterday with the AP doing the steering in 15knts of wind and a beam reach.

Watched it rain, heavy, most of the weekend so I got nothing done on the boat. Time to start rebedding deck hardware..... weeee.

Wow! Maine. I'm jealous. Reminds me of a 9 day cruise of down east Maine we made with our friends on their C&C37 10 years ago.. Started out at Falmouth Fourside then Harpswell, Sebasco, Moffetts Cove in Townsend Gut, Boothbay, Vinylhaven, Pulphit, Bucks Harbor(my favorite) and Camden. We had wonderful weather (august-no fog) and a delightful time. I love lobster. We had lobster almost every day sometimes right off the boat (from the CO-OP). Everyone enjoyed those delicious fresh "bugs" That is, except me. I had just been diagnosed with gout and had an acute attack months earlier. Lobster is the ultimate trigger for people with gout. Yikes! The memory of intense unrelenting excruciating pain of an acute gout attack overcame my love of lobster. It was cruel and unusual punishment to watch everyone else eating "lobstah" at least once per day. I had to console myself eating fresh Maine blueberry pie, Maine blueberry pancakes, and Maine blueberries and cream as much as I could.

I carry 2 spare props for my auxilary outboard, but as I think about it, I'm not certain I have the right size wrench to remove it. As for the dinghy, I'll double check next time I'm at the boat to make sure I have spare shear pins...
