Whats a good web site to see nav maps for knocking around in the keys online and/or order maps? I was looking at "mapserver.maptech.com" and at the north end of Little Torch Key, I have a relative there that has a slip to open water, but the map shows green color on the west side with no depth figures, what does that mean, less than 1 fathom? I'm new to reading nav maps, I assume the numbers are fathoms, 3 feet??? Looks like skinny sailing there with center board up!!! I was hoping to be able to off ramp my oday 22 at some close by ramp, got to find out where ramps are located, and get into the slip to dock at their back door. Give me some good web sites to go to. David S happy sailing

David S; You need to get hold of NOAA "Chart one" which is a booklet of chart symbols etc. It is a key to the use of all NOAA charts. BTW the term for a nautical "map' is a "Chart". The scale of a chart will determine the amount of info you can get from it, but sometimes the charts for waters along the littoral just do not offer much in the way of depth, since most every depth figure shown is the result of an actual sounding. Even the validity of these soundings is dependent upon time, tide and weather events. The two entities, Maps and Charts, bear some resemblence but are substantially different. Charts have way more info on them re. the water areas, and relatively very litle re. the land areas. You shouldn't even go to sea in an area where Charts are needed, without having a "NOAA Chart One" on board.
