I must be missing something. Based on the picture, it would seem this would hinder, not help, unlocking the line from the cleat, by limiting the distance I can pull straight up. How does this improve things?

I think the guide enables one to lift or set the line from just about any angle. It looks like a good addition. I have a similar condition and to release or set, I have to get my hand directly behind the cam cleat. I don't think the loop restricts the upward pull.

Thanks Scott, that helps, I think. You don't have to take the time to line up the "rope" with the gap between the cleat halves when re-cleating. The efficiency gained does not occur at the uncleating step, it occurs at the re-cleating step.

I bought a harken cam cleat with the guide for an application that I haven't installed yet. I didn't really know what the guide was for. Now I know! Now I have to figure out how to add (or if I can add) this to the traveler cleats (Schaefer double sheave w/cam). Those are the one's that Sue can't seem to master because she doesn't line it up right.

SFS it does help with the uncleating as well. I recently installed them on my jib sheet cleats. Now I don't have to go to the low side of the boat to adjust the sheets while on a significant heel.

This is a brilliant tip. My line constantly gets behind a cam and takes more time to sort it out. I think my traveler cleats are Schaefer.

I put fairleads on all my dinghy sheet cam-cleats. You can use a line-"whip" technique to bring the sheet out of the cams but still contained and ready for re-set. Put a figure-8 knot in the end of your sheet and you never have to go looking for the line, it remains on the cleat.

That would be an upgrade but a strap AND fairlead make it very easy to guide a line into and out of the cams.

That's the one I think I would want. I'll have to see if the fastener holes will match. First, I'll have to see if Schaefer has the the same thing (but I haven't seen them in their product selection). I've got the eye straps on my traveler cleats, but Sue still has a problem with it.

I found eyestraps to fit my Schaefer cleats. Funny that I couldn't find Schaefers that would work. Went with Harken HAR137. Fairleads would have been nice but just capturing the lines will make a huge difference, especially single handing. (is it 'handing' or 'handling'?).
