Back in 2000 and 2001 there were several discussions regarding the "Great Circle Route", the inland(mostly) route around the eastern half of the U.S. Did any of you who were planning the trip complete it? Or are you currently doing it? The Related Link is one source of information. Then in Google you can find many more. I got quite a few hits with "great circle route icw". The "icw" eliminates all the hits on the REAL Great Circle Route. We have started to rethink our 2004 plan to go out the Erie Canal in favor of going to Chicago and down the rivers. We would leave the boat(H37C) at several times to return home and make this a very leisurely trip of more than a year. Since we have kids in Arkansas and Sarasota we have jumping off spots. What started this was a recent article in CW or Sailing where the couple took their 45-footer out that way.

Another published source is Ron and Eva AStob's "Honey. Let's Get a Boat." 40 foot power, but a nice read and interesting factual appendix. Their website is posted as a link.

Hudson to St. Lawrence

On some of the "Great Circle Loop" maps I see a highlighted route straight north to the St. Lawrence. Is there really a sailboat passage from the Hudson to the St. Lawrence? I do not find any text about this route.

Northern Route

Ed, instead of travelling west along the Erie, you would travel north to Lake Champlain. Then further north Lake Champlain is joined to the St Lawrence, via the Chambly Canal and the Richelieu River where it exits into the St. Lawrence at Sorel, Quebec. From there you could travel downriver to Quebec City or up river towards Montreal, Kingston, the thousand islands and into L. Ontario. This is how most of Quebec boaters join into the ICW. The Chambly Canal is about 20 km and has 9 locks. I have included a website from Parks Canada. Don
