Hey Don, not sure where the carcass was originally from, but it was in the bone yard at Worton Creek Marina. These cowboys are always dragging up and down the Elk terrorizing the locals. There should be a law about running race boats on a public waterway. You can't take a Funny Car on 95, let alone have a drag race with one, so why should these guys get to run these loud obnoxious race boats on a public waterway??? Sometimes when we have dinner on our porch, it is so loud you can't even have a conversion and they're 3/4 of a mile away!! I hear over on the N.E. it is even worse. The DNR guys don't bat an eye when they go blasting by. One time I almost bailed when one came right at me an turned at the last moment, not sure if it was intentional or inattentiveness.

BTW, while we were there this summer they were also bringing boats down for auction from the Sassafras that had been crushed from the slip collapses. Sure hope we don't had another winter like that!

Witz...

We've tried to shut down the open exhaust runners on the North East. A form to record the offense was published and passed around among the residents. Things quieted down after that.

The dealers put the word out that they were hurting all the other go-fasters that were complying with silenced exhausts. Still, there's a couple who just don't get it.

DNR has told us to get their boat name, number, description, time of day, distance from the offender, dB reading, etc. Ever try to read a boat's registration number off the bow of one going over 50 knots?

I think the only solution is to document them with pictures while they're at a ramp, dock, or in a marina. Then the data the DNR wants can be sent when the noisemaker ventures forth.

In October, GYB still had two unoccupied sheds due to unsafe conditions. One whole shed was torn down and the space still vacant. I was told that the insurance payment was holding up the rebuild. Can't begin to imagine the economic impact of such a disaster. Where's Al Gore's global warming when we need it?

I have seen these guys blast right past the DNR and they did nothing.

I purpose that in order for a pleasure boat with a 200HP rating and above to obtain a registration they should be required to have a noise inspection done (for a fee that would pay for the for the additional personnel needed), at the time of sale by DNR staff. A certificate of compliance would be issued and sent in with the registration application. If exhaust modifycations occur after the sale and they are caught, then impose a fine.

The DNR should also post and enforce a speed limit on all tributary's to the bay.

I have a friend with one of the big block engine boats his came standard with a cutout valve for the exhaust. He is required to be quiet near the docks but there is no restriction in open water. Sometimes you can hear them for 15 minutes before you can see them.

Open water, not sure what the diffention of this is?
Between the railroad bridges on the east side of Garrett Island there is a 6 MPH speed limit. West of Garrett Island there is no speed limit or noise restriction. All boat are very polite on the east side or the island.

As soon as they get clear of the canal, it's let it rip on the Elk that can be a narrow as 1/2 mile with high banks that echo the sound.
