Listing to Starboard 1 1/4"

My Cal 28 ('86) is listing to Starboard when at dock. The scum line is about 1 1/4" higher on the bootstripe on starboard than on port side. Also getting some barnacles attatching on the space between boot stripe and bottom paint. I've measured from the gunwall to the bottom paint line...same both sides.... measured from gunwall to bottom of full shoal keel ( to see if it's off center) but exactly centered. 2 Batteries are just off-center of boat, bilateral 20 gal holding tanks, head holding tank (most of time 1/2 empty) is on the Port side. No water damage or water in the glass. So it seems equally loaded. Short of stripping off the paint and repainting the boot strip in the "right " place, what do you think is making me list . Of course, when sailing, this in not an issue. Thanks, Steph

Knowing Port Annapolis as I do, I wonder if it's stuck in the mud at low tide.

Given relative balance inside the boat, the only other thing I can think of is a tilt from the upper mast, like that of a metronome.

For what it's worth, I see new Benateaus listing slightly in port, so you're not alone.
But it is a puzzle.

How much stuff do you have stowed inside to starboard?

My neighbor called one day to tell me my boat was listing "more than normal" to starboard. Turns out I had forgot and left a tub full of spares and "stuphe" sittng on the table rather than take it home.

Check it in the water. With our boat just moving from port to starboard will shift the boat that much. When I am frying bacon in the morning I can tell by the bacon fat in the skillet when Nancy gets up and comes into the main part of the cabin. If she sits starboard or stands midships. She weighs about 130 so it doesn't take much to change the trim. Ice in the ice box could make the change or consuming all of the bottled drinks.

Dreaded port list

FWIW, so many Catalinas came with a list that it's become almost as "famous" as "The Catalina Smile" as a subject topic. One guy wrote in that he was going to add lead to one side of his boat to offset the list. I told him to try using more batteries instead! Boats of recreational use sizes are prone to this and each one is a bit different. Lotsa good ideas so far.

My 32 ODay has the same list and I've been going nuts for 5 years over this including shifting batteries and gear, I'm getting close but when I switch to 6 volt batteries in the near future I fear I'll be starting to reshift the gear cause I might be listing to the other side

I have and do, but I wonder if the list on our Hunter is why I go faster on a starboard tack than port.

Hey Bob!

Our H34's have a "normal" staboard list at rest of 1 to 2 degrees due to all the weighty things on that side: batteries, fuel, head & holding tank, galley stove (and for me, the A/C unit). Keep the water tank filled and put all the "junk" on the port side and it sits nearly level!

Steph: like Bob suggested, check where all your heavy items are located/stored. That could make the difference.

Good suggestions and as I stated, my batteries, etc are balanced. The surveyor noted this listing when I bought her 5 years ago and I never cared until now since when painting the bottom each year, I have to touch up the boot stripe as well as it is not intended for underwater. Also, there's an inch of unpainted stripe between the boot strip and bottom paint so I get barnacles and potentially blisters. I'll just keep the starboard water tank empty (that's 160 lbs right there). Thanks again. Steph

If the port side sits higher at rest, consider port as your favorite tack and take advantage of the extra weight.

Deadline, they are now rebuilding alot of Port Annapolis. I can see it from my boat across the creek.

If port sits higher than the weight advantage for the boat to sail flatter would be stbd tack.

I was on a cruise ship with Nancy a few years ago watching the water from the after deck. The ship was about 5 degrees out of trim. The gap between the rail and the horizon was a distinct wedge.

Listing boat

Just kind of scattershooting here, but I notice some of this at my dock. Which way is the prevailing wind there. It doesn't take a lot of breeze to heel a boat over one or two degrees. Could it be that the winds just keep it pinned over a little bit, most of the time. Other than this idle thought, I am inclined to go with others who say just forget about it and go sailing.

Like I said earlier, it has been listing by 1 to 1 1/4" for 5 years, plus before I bought it since the surveyor noted the line on the bootstripe.... Been in many different marinas and wind directions....so it's not an "outside" force. Just the way she sits. PS... Port Annapolis has rebuilt 2 docks (including mine) and a new Club House. Looks nice. Ron, you are on the nice side of Back Creek! But I never sit on the bottom so that's not it either! I'll live with it and paint the bottom paint up to to where the real waterline is. Maybe your list is from all the soft drinks on one side and all the hard liquor on the other?

It isn't all that unusual. My boat leans a bit to port, and it is due to the fact that there's more weight on the port side of the boat, due to the outboard, galley and water tank all being on the port side. I've slowly re-distributed where things are stowed, and gotten it to be a bit better balanced, but it isn't quite level yet.
