Liquid Life Caulk turned TAN?

Went to peel off the tarp on the old Hunter 30 (1978) and all the spots on the deck that we sqeezed liquid life caulk into (to avoid possible leaks and further cracking) has turned dark TAN? This looks awful. I plan to redo the deck in the Fall but don't want to see these dozen or so TAN marks topside. Any idea why this happened? Could it have been avoided? Is there some easy way to whiten this up again? Short of sanding and painting (which will lead to the entire deck), is there some sort of solvent that might wipe the residue off the deck? Other than this: The bottom is painted ... the hull is waxed ... the interior looks immaculate! We've been fortunate considering it was such a harsh and long winter.

Can you razor off the top layer.

Eric: This is probably some type of pollution problem. Could be anything from something that was in the air or something that may have been on deck that leached into the caulking. Personally I have not seen this but stuff happens. If these areas were covered, we probably can assume that it was NOT sunlight. I am wondering if you could scrap the top layer off with a razor blade. It if is just the surface that is discolored this may do the trick. You may also be able to use some bleach and water and see if this lifts the color from the caulking.

Same Thing Happened to Me...

I recalked the sea hood on my H31 a couple of months ago and used Life Calk. It turned a very unattractive yellow or tan. Anyone know if it's possible to use another calk that my adhere to the Life Calk to conceal it? Thanks. Laura Bertran 1985 H31, Rising Tide

Auto paint....Just might work!

Hi, Go to the auto store and get those little tubes of touch up paint. Life caulk can be painted. I know this may not be the ultimate answer. But touch up the areas with the touch up paint. Auto touch up paint will hold up for a long long time...just as long as the life caulk. I know there are probably better answers for this with more permanent solutions that may or may not cost more. But this is a solution. Most paints you find at Lowes and like stores are not really suited for marine use. If you want, you could have something mixed up for top side paint at a Marine Supply Store. But for what it is worth, by the time the auto touch up paint wears off, you will be bedding those fittings and or cracks any way. For this reason, I suggest the auto touch up paint. Skip

Try some Fantastic!

With a little research...... Exposure to sulfur, usually through environmental or air borne pollutants may cause the discoloration. In most cases, it cleans up easily with Fantastic.

Thanks, Steve...

That's exactly what the President of the Boat Life company responded to my email about this. I'll try it this weekend. By the way, Steve, I seem to remember you saying that you have a simrad WP30 autopilot. I'm thinking about getting one and wondered about any installation problems with the Merriman Steering. Thanks again. Laura

Electrical is the worst part.

Laura: Actually the electrical is the most difficult part (not bad at all). There where some shims that you need to put on the pedestal because the diameter is slightly less than the WP housing. They are in the kit. It just takes a little fiddling around to get it centered. You will also want to get a fish tape to pull the cable down the pedestal. Ours has a hole in the forward side that we used to put the wire down too.
