I have heard that linseed oil under Cetol gives a longer life. Though I havn't found anyone using it in this manner. Has anyone out there tried this combonation?

It would seem to me that oils and Cetol don’t mix

On my first attempt for rejuvenate my weathered grey teak I used oil after a lot of sanding. I later found that this would probably require frequent reapplications of oil and that Cetol would give me the luster I was looking for without the constant upkeep. The first coat didn’t seem to want to dry until vigorous scrubbing with Acetone to remove the oil so it would seem to me that oils and Cetol don’t mix well.

No oil

Rob - I agree with B. Noble - the drill I followed was to sand the weathered teak, then wash with acetone to remove any residual oil before applying 3-4 coats of Cetol. I'm pretty confident that linseed oil would compromise the ability of the Cetol to bond with the wood, as well as screw up its' drying. I don't mean to be facetious, but reading ( and following ) the directions on the can is usually worth doing, for any finish.

Mixing

Morning Rob: Mixing linseed oil with oil based enamels and varnishes is an old painters trick that has been around for years. It smoothes out the finish makes application easier and adds gloss. I've been doing it for years. I'm a Cetol user and have never considered the mix as I'm not real sure what the make up of Cetol is or what it would do for the durability. It goes on well without any help. If your interested in trying it, you might pour off a little Cetol and stir in a small quanity of linseed oil and see what happens on a test piece of wood. I wouldn't try it on the boat until you see what if anything happens on the test run. If you do try it, let us know what the results were.
