I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I just bought a Xantrex Link 10 and I plan to install it on my boat this weekend (if it arrives in time). I think that it will help me see exactly what is going on and how my batteries are working in my new setup. It should take a lot of guess work out of everything and it will give me some peace of mind knowing what my status is. How hard of an install is this going to be and how long should it take? I bought the 25' wiring hookup also just to make things go smoother. Was this a good idea? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for this endeavor? Thanks in advance!!

how long should it take?

how good are you? :):):) Good idea to get the 25 foot wire bundle. You can cut it. I spent a week putting in our Link 2000, which has probably twice as many wires. Much of that time was spent connecting ring terminals, and mounting stuff. There are a lot less wire connections on the Link 10, but ya still have to mount the Link 10 and the shunt and pull wires. I work slowly, deliberately and enjoy being on the boat. :) I also spend a lot of time writing down what I've done, including wiring diagrams. You should, too. If you read (both present and past tense) the instructions, it shouldn't take too long (what's that mean?) IF you prepare ahead of time. Like, how do you plan to and make up your connections (ring terminals) - ahead of time or at the boat; how to do need to route your wiring (new holes or an easy run), where are you going to mount the controller (need a hole for that, too), etc. Only YOU can determine those things. You will find that it is a very useful tool. If you've done an energy budget, on paper or in your head, it will confirm the loads you have been drawing from various DC items on board. What I found, interestingly enough, was that I was spot on with the draw-down, but WAY WAY WAY low on the amount of INPUT current from various charging sources (shorepower and alternator) primarily because of the acceptance level of the batteries which decreases as they get fuller. Good idea to install one.

Great Tool

You'll also need an extra battery cable or large lugs for a battery cable as the shunt goes between the load and the negative battery cable. While it is possible to cut the Negative Battery Cable and install new lugs to attach to the shunt, I find it easier to simply install a short battery cable between the load and the shunt or between he battery and the shunt. I have installed either a Link 10 or Link 20 on every boat I've owned since they came out and it is one of the most important instruments on the boat IMHO. Depending on the wire run and how difficult running the wires is it can take from an afternoon to a couple of days. On my Beneteau 373 I took about 4 hours. Carefully read and re-read the installation and programing instructions. Then when you have it installed read the programing instructions again. It can, at least it is for me, be a little confusing. It's worth the effort.

One thing that is for sure

Whatever you estimate the time necessary for the install, it will take twice as long. This is a basic mathematical formula, something like finding the square root of 135 1/2. It holds true on all boats, and all work performed on boats. I think it was first discovered by a man by the name of Murphy.:)

A nice little book called Cruising Rules

stated that the formula for a man to return to his home from his boat, based on his initial estimate is x = 2n + 1 and that was being optomistic and didn't involve work, just sailing (and maybe some cleaning up ...:))

Not Hard

Not really hard to do if you read and follow the install directions carefully. It really depends where your batteries are located where you are mounting the Link 10 display, easy install. Plan the lay out before starting, tools needed and good to go. Possible 2 to 4 hours for the install, just read the directions and you will have no problem. Nick

Some things won't be to hard

I know where the run for the wires will go and I know where the instrument will go. The instrument will go near the nav station in my Catalina 30. The batteries are a short distance away and will be able to run the wires through there to the location where the Link will go with a coat hanger. I have already run some wires through this area in this fashion. I am curious (haven't gotten the Link yet but assume it will be in today or tomorrow) what the shunt is like. I have all negative leads running to the first house battery. I guess that the shunt will have 1 lead coming out of it and running to the first house battery and then the other negative leads will meet at the shunt. How big is the shunt? Do I need to mount it to anything?

Not really.

All negative leads must come from the shunt. And the shunt is rock solid. If you place it near the batteries, the connecting cable will hold it from moving much. And the negative terminals don't need to covered/insulated. You have a very useful instrument.

Shunt

If I remember the shunt gets screwed down to solid surface and one heavey ground cable from battery to one side and one cable to ground on other side,I think two coiled wires from the display to shunt and two more from display to battery fused Its been a few years since I added the link 10 on my 290, everything was short distance right next to nav station. They do a good job with the install instructions. Nick

The link below connects you to the Knowledge Base...

article that explains what I went through installing our Link 1000. Let me know if you have other questions. Terry

The shunt is about twice the size of the avatar

boxes and about as thick as deck of cards or two. Download the instructions from the web instead of waiting for your new best buddy and read 'em.

Installation Complete!

Just finished the install today. It worked as soon as I put the fuses in. I am still waiting for the sync period. My house bank is 230 amp hours but I couldn't get it to scale in anything by 20's so I left it at 220 Amp Hours. Will this be a problem?
