We have a 1986 Hunter 23 and I am looking at running the main and jib halyard to the cockpit and found much good info in the archives but I still had a couple of questions. Is the cabin top strong enough to support the winch off the mast? Do you really need to do this? I don't know that we have ever used the winch to get the main up. Second we have the Kenyon mast and I saw on boat had some type of set up at the base of the mast with two pulleys but I can't tell how it is set up. The archives seemed to deal mostly with Z-Spar masts. Has anyone done this with a Kenyon mast or have pics? One other question why do they always seem to use the jam cleats instead of cam or some other ones for halyards? Just curious. Thanks in advance. Rob Morton S/V Euphoira

Here's mine, a setup on the boat when I bought it. Turning block at base goes to another turning block a bit to port, then through an "eye" and a "lock" and to the cabintop winch (in black). I don't single hand (yet) so I've only used it once. It's just as easy to climb on the cabin and hoist. I have a furlered jib so no help there. Mac

Yes the cabin top is strong enough for the winch. For best performance you should winch your main and jib up tight to get a tight luff. Particularly in heavy air. You should cleat them with rope clutches. Just works much better for halyards.

Cam cleats vs. clutches or jams
To spread the cams and release line from cam cleats, you pull the line even tighter before you can free it. If the halyard is properly tensioned, it should be tight already, making it difficult to pull it back further and spread the cams. Jams will work, but the speed and ease of clutches can't be beat. A couple of points that I learned by doing: I used 1/8-inch aluminum plates when I did my installation, thru-bolted with SS hardware. Make sure you seal the holes well. To install the clutches and winch, I removed the sliding hatch's internal wood trim on the starboard side (or the side on which you're making your install), pulled the carpet away from the cabin ceiling and put the plates against the fiberglass. Then, once I was finished, I used spray adhesive to reattached the carpet to the ceiling, replaced the trim and was done.

Mac, a question about gooseneck....
Mac, Thanks for your post and the photo. It looks like I have the same mast on my h23 --- I have a question for you. Do you have/can you post any pictures of your gooseneck (mast-boom connection). I have a sliding gooseneck, but no downhaul or vang. When I hoist the main, the gooseneck just slides up with tension on the luff. Is yours fixed or sliding? If sliding, do you have a downhaul? Thanks for your help. -Rob

Here's a picture of the way I did my halyards on my 1986 h23 with a Kenyon mast. The reason I mounted the two turning blocks on the mast instead of useing stand up blocks on the deck was just to keep from drilling any more holes in the deck than I had to. you can remove the mast butt by just removeing four screws. I thru bolted the eye straps with nylock nuts and approx. 1" wide washers. The washers just bent to conform to the inside shape of the mast. I mounted the winch and halyard clutchs by thru bolting in the same manor. I didn't see the need for backing plates under the carpet.
