We need to replace the main halyard on our Hunter 31 (1986) and have several questions:What line to buy? packaged 7/16' 110' long with new shackle woven onto line @ about $175? This is the right length but a tad smaller rope? will this work on sheeves?orbuy 110' of 7/16" and use old shackle @ $115?orpackaged 1/2" line 140' long with new shackle woven onto line @ $225?... a modular replacement on diameter, but do we really need 140' for a forty foot stick up, down and back to cockpit?orbuy 110' of 1/2" line and tie old shackle on new line? and use bolen knot?orwait until it is finally too worn? Some parts are frayed but 2/3 of thickness is still there. We ain't made of money, but don't want to waste it and get the wrong size, length. No, we cannot just measure the old one, as somebody trimmed part of halyard some time ago. Joe

I get my line a whole lot cheaper

I get all my lines from a company in Columbus, Ohio. Believe it or not, I only pay about 7 dollars for 100 foot of 1/2 inch marine braid line....The same stuff West Marine sells for one dollar a foot or so.SkipP.S. If you buy your line at a marine store, you are going to pay marine prices. But if you get it at whole sale companies and places like that you can get it a lot cheaper. When you go to a company like this, ask them for thier seconds. You will drop dead when you see what prices you can actually buy this stuff for.

Don't use a knot

And don't use a bowline in any case, use a scafold knot with a thimble - but only in an emergency.Resplice the eye - or have someone do it.

Shop around.

Joe:Shop around. If you can get Sta-set or Sta-SetX (New England Rope) at Skips prices go for it. You can find a rigger to do the splices for you for about $15-20 if you cannot do it yourself.If this does not work out, check out Sailnet, PYacht and some other marine stores. My preference is Sta-Set, the Sta-SetX is a harder line, but has less stretch. Yale also makes good quality line.

I have three new halyards, all from Sailnet as Dave pointed out. But also check E-Bay. A lot of auctions are conducted by companies just like the one in Columbus. If you do not want to mess with an auction just call them. You will find them very willing to deal on the phone. See Related Link for an example.

updates, updates

The new 1/2" 135' line with shackle attached today! One day after a slip-neighbor told us 3/8" would have been the greatest of plenty. In fact the 7/16" new sheet is over-kill as well. Yet the Hunter 1-800 guy said 7/16" for both sheet and halyard! hmm. Perhaps we will use 3/8" for the genoa sheet. joe
