Here's what we did (long)...

To do it right is no small task. the first thing I would do, is get the Tech Manual from the C22 Association if you already don't have it. And join the Association while you're at it. For about $30, you get some vey worthwhile information and for about $10, you get a catalog of parts specific to the 22 from Catalina Direct and a tech manual of upgrades/modifications that have been done by other C22 owners. We ordered the "kit" from Catalina Direct, which included a new SS mast step plate with flanges and holes to be able to attach a couple of blocks (provided in the kit), new halyards of the proper length (although I wish they were longer) a couple of deck organizers and a couple of cam cleats and instructions. All the hardware and halyards are good quality, name brand stuff. You start by replacing your halyards with the new proper length ones, which means if you haven't already switched over to all-rope halyards, you need to do that as well. Remove your existing mast step and insert the SS plate with flanges beneath it and remount mast step. Attach a block on each side of the mast to the new plate after taping your new lines in place the way you want them to run. Mount the deck organizers on the cabin top where you want your lines to run through them. This means drilling holes through your cabin top and bedding the organizers properly to prevent leaks. Run the lines through your organizers (one port, one starboard this makes the "turn" from the mast towards the aft end)and between the poptop and the teak handrails aft to the edge of the cabintop on either side of the companionway where you have mounted and bedded the cam cleats. I probably should have mentioned long before now that our C22 is a 1985 with the 5-loop teak handrails. You need to actually remove the handrails and remove the last loop. (Yes, cut it off!) Or you can order the 4-loop handrail from Catalina Direct. Refinish and rebed. We also added a couple of teeny Andersen winches to the cabintop just before the cam cleats as well. Our preference only. Get started by calling Catalina Direct. The info can be found at the Catalina 22 Association website. It's a great project and one that provides much satisfaction when it's complete. Have fun and sail safe!
