I recently purchased a 1983 H30 and have not yet had the mast up. The lines that are led back to the cockpit go through rope clutches. There are three clutches on the port side and two on the starboard side. Can anyone tell me what line goes through each clutch? There is nothing in the H30 manual. I found a manual for a Hunter 45 with a diagram but it's not the same. I'm going to assume that the halyards go on the starboard side where the winch is, but what are the other three for on the port side?

alot depends on where the winches are

You need to have the halyards where the winchs are. usually you see the main on the starboard and jibs to port but it depends on where you hve winches. it also depends on if you have spin gear, spin halyards topping lifts so what every works is ok. it is nice to have a pole lift next to the pole down haul. I suppose there is some proper way to do it but thats my feeling'

Coachroof lines on H-30 and others

The two to starboard with no winch are probably the main halyards, primary and a spare. Do you have an adjustable gooseneck? --if so, the common practice is to peak the main by hand and then take up on it by drawing the boom's forward end down with a vang-like purchase to the base of the mast. This is desirable for many reasons and on smaller boats does not always require a winch. I changed Diana (a '74 H-25) to be like this but I still have the halyard winch too. Ed is correct: sailing protocol/tradition calls for headsail hal'ds to port of the spar and mains/courses to starboard. The third line is probably a spinnaker halyard or pole lift, or it could be the far end of a double-ended mainsail sheet. Consider adding a matching winch for the main halyards-- a 30 is not a dinghy and should need one to keep the luff properly tensioned. My boat came with one halyard winch to starboard of the hatch for single main and jib halyards (and the jib was to port of the main). I retrofitted a double-halyard masthead and have two lines to each side. (I still need to acquire two Lewmar 8's for the sheets and will move the 7's to the cabintop.) On Diana the spin. hal'd and pole lift are on the mast and tailed from up forward, so I have no 'third' lines running aft. I'd be suspicious of vintage 1983 rope for crucial halyards. Inspect all your halyards before raising the mast. They're a lot easier to replace and re-reeve when the mast is horizontal and the old halyards are still intact! JC 2

Winches

The gooseneck is fixed, so the main halyard will have to go to the starboard side with the jib halyard right next to it. That covers both clutches on the starboard side. Now for the clutches for the port side. There is a triple clutch and two jam cleats. Without the mast up, I'm not sure what any of these are for. The mast base has 2 sheaves comming out of the port side and two on the starboard side. At this time there is no spinaker or hardware but one of the sheaves could be for a spinaker or spare halyard. What is the other one for? Possibly a topping lift? Also, there is a stand-up block aft of the traveler on the port side and a pad-eye aft of the traveler to starboard. I think that these are for the main sheet. It's kind of a funky rig but what I have seen is the mainsheet connects to the pad-eye then runs up to a block on the boom then down to the top block of a fiddleblock on the traveler then up to another block on the boom. From there it runs back to the bottom sheave of the fiddle block and back up to a third block on the boom. Then it goes to the standup block aft of the traveler and to the jam cleat. I have seen three different rigs for the factory mainsheet and am trying to figure out wich one is for my boat. Can anyone help on this one?
