A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the joint between the companionway and the salon cabin ceiling is separating. This is the U-shaped joint just under the companionway sliding hatch cover. I need to re-bond the joint, probably all the way around. Any suggestions about how to approach this project? I assume that I'll have to sand/grind away gelcoat finish on the under-surface, grind a fillet at the separated joint, support the ceiling liner with a brace, fill the fillet with some sort of epoxy-fiber, then maybe add two layers of fiberglass tape all around? Is this structural failure a sign of other problems? Thanks!

A good plan

Your plan sounds good to me. This is the first time i have heard of this problem on any of the Hunters of that vintage. I don't think any particular concern is indicated. I would guess that a weakness at manufacturing combined with lots of time, and accumulated stress to open the crack. Since the liner does not carry an load, I don't see much reason for further concern. David Lady Lillie
