Does anyone know where I can get a line stripper for a Barient winch somewhere in the Annapolis area whould be ideal, but anywhere would be great? I have a Vision-32 with 4 of these winches. So, I expect the other 3 to need the same attention sometime soon. Thanks, Bill

Try this carefully.

Somewhere on the internet I found a reference to an Australian Yacht Winch Sales. Something about Hutton Winches. I contacted them in mid July and got a reply saying they could get/make the part for my winch for $28 plus $25 for freight insured airmail. I airmailed a check for the amount the next day and haven't heard from them since. Kind of glad I sent the check rather than give them my Credit Card number which was one of the alternatives. I've emailed them a couple of times since and still no reply. They had had two addresses. winches@attglobal.net and winches@imb.net. Good luck.

Bill,
Try Bacon Sails in Annapolis - they've got an amazing amount of stuff - new and used. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to winch parts when I was there last week, but I did see some.
I was there to pick up my new sails for our new(to us) '89 Vision-32. Where do you sail yours? We're on the Magothy.

I heard from the Australian Company

Here is what transpired.

I'm sorry you feel that way, Patti. It is my understanding that e-mail is almost instantaneous and costs nothing. What I asked for in my e-mails was some communication informing me of what was happening. Instead I seemed to be ignored. The average customer like myself is not versed in international dealings. If I am not mistaken, your quote did not say anything about the "conversion" or what ever the $2.86 was that caused you to be $12.86 out of pocket. Is there a way that I can send you the $12.86 without you having to pay an additional $10 conversion?

Attn Mr Hoffman,
The reason I did not return your email on the 31st July ,1st we did
not received your cheque until the 4th August. 2nd I was at the
Sydney International boat show until the 5th We went to the bank the
morning if the 4th August for the conversion we were charged an extra
$10.00 Australian for the conversion which you neglected to cover
with your cheque. but I shipped anyway via insured airmail USPS
tracking No cv096526674au on the 6th August .If you go to the USPS
track and trace and put in the tracking No............... It will
tell you your order has been in customs for the 8th of August.
So we are out of packet Australian $12.86 and we then get an email
like this. Without our company helping people like yourself with very
old winch parts you would be spending many hundred of $ on new ones.
We feel we give a very good service to our customers. Please feel
free to go else were.
Regards Patti

Dick: Thanks for the reply. I saw Hutton on line too, but hesitated to deal with an outfit so far away. I will look into it again with them. Bill

Part update

I just got an email from Patti in Australia. It seems that my part that was at US Customs according to my USPS tracking since August 8th has just been returned to him. He wrote to varify my address that I have lived at since 1993. He is going to mail it again and may use my work address. Others with dealings with the government may sympathize. Let us know how you come out with Bacon.
