Line Sizes

I am replacing some of my running rigging on my Catalina 27 1977 and need thoughts on line size.
Specifically what size are lines are other running for their Boom Vang and Traveler.
Catalina specs 5/16" and 3/8".
5/16" seems somewhat small for the traveler. Not that its not strong enough but just seems small in my hands, which aren't that large anyway.
I am thinking of up sizing to 7/16" for vang and traveler.
I upsized my genoa sheets to 7/16" and that seems about right.

If you have the curved traveler, you are going to need to put some back into pulling it up windward of the center line in a breeze as you will be working against the mainsheet. I imagine a thicker line will help your grip if you can fit it through the blocks.

weinie's right. Even if you have the straight Garhauer traveler, you must be careful about NOT oversizing the traveler control line. I once did, and the sheaves jammed. Not fun when you're trying to move the angle of attack without using the mainsheet. I went back to smaller line but we have a 6:1 purchase! :) I assume you have a coachroof mounted traveler. If not, things are a tad different.

I want to upsize the line for the aft Main Sheet traveler (Fiddle Block assembly) Traveler to Boom end, to 7/16". I don't think this will be a problem.
I do not have a mid-boom traveler. Mine is mounted behind the tiller. I am thinking of adding a windward sheeting car system. I don't think I will be able to upsize this line.

I agree with you now that you've explained it. A windward sheeting car system is great, but could be overkill for your boat, agree that the line size there shouldn't be an issue, easier to release and not have to pull up. Your boat, your choice. Good luck.
