Back on topic, I use cajun ropes on my last two boats and they seem to hold up well.

More likely, the manufacturer changed the plastic composition in the past 20 years or went out business.
Catalina Yachts probably has some stock of the old cap; Catalina Direct is buying either the new cap or a knock-off someone else is making.

Doesn't mean they're trying to rip anyone off. Products change over time and not always for the better.
