After 15 years of wanting to do this, I finally bought my first boat, an 83 C22 swing keel. I took the mast down with the previous owner, and am wondering when I raise the mast, could I tie a line to the forestay and use my trailer winch to help raise the mast?? All shrouds are still connected except the forward ones, and I have a "mast up" aft. This is the first of what will probably be many, many questions. Won't make Memorial Day to sail, but planning on the following weekend. Thank you all in advance.

Missing something important

You will need some way to keep the mast fromwanting to go sideways.I use two pieces of condiut in place of the forward lower shrouds .There are bolted together along with the forestay .Once the mast is up I undo the bolts, reconnect forestay and connect the forward lower shrouds.Welcome aboard. This was all new to me 2 years ago.

Timm: I can't visualize your set-up with conduit for the mast raising. Please elaborate. Thanks.

How about a wife

Would my wife standing behind and guiding the mast into position while I crank suffice?? Thanks you guys for your help.

'we do a similar routine

We raise the mast while the boat is still on the trailer. I hold the mast steady so it won't tip to one side or the other, while my wife cranks the trailer winch that has the strap attached to the forstay. Just be careful that the shrouds don't get caught on something as the mast is brought up. Also, be sure that the back stay is loose enough that you can easily attach the two leading shrouds. good luck.

Shouldn't need the winch when

two people are mast raising. I only use the cabin top winch when I am by myself. Tie a line to the forestay & one person can easily pull on that. (my 100 lb. daughter used to do it) The other person lift the mast out of the crutch & walk towards the cabin top as the mast raises. When the mast is about 30 to 45 degrees up, the person pulling on the forestay has all the weight. The top & lower aft shrouds must be connected but loosened for this operation. The backstay must be connected but the adjustment never needs to be changed. These 4 shrouds help to keep the mast from wandering too far sideways. Check on the wind direction. My shrouds always get caught on something on the way up. I have a homemade mast hinge plate that makes this an easy operation. Regards, Bob B.

Thanx

I want to thatn all you guys for your quick help. Raised the mast in driveway, no problems. Hope to put her in the water this weekend, weather looks crappy though. Again, Thanx.

The explanation

I use two pieces of conduit 4 feet long. They are bolted loosely together. The other ends of the conduit are screwed into the forward lower eyebolts. The forestay is connected where the two pieces are bolted together.A set of pulleys connected to the bow and a set connected to the forestay. Now I can raise the mastby pulling on the rope going through both sets of blocks from the cockpit. If a shroud catches I can cleat the line and go and unhook it.Once the mast gets up to a certain point the rest of the shrouds will hold up the mast.
