It is just about time to start sailing again. One problem. The line that pulls the rudder up and down on my '99 240 is wearing thin (is this normal after just one season?) Has anyone replaced it? What thickness do I need to buy and how long? Thanks, Dan

rudder line,

the line on our h23 lasted several years of sailing in a lake with good depths , then we moved to a very shallow lake and had to frequently replace line, when rudder hits submerged stump it kicks up , this happened a good deal so caused wear, unless u are sailng in these conditions I dont think you should have wear in such a short time, it is easy to replace, do it and keep a spare, it is easier to do the repair in a semi emergency if you are familiar with the procedure, you dont want to do it for the first time under stressful circumstances, Do you raise and lower your rudder at dock slip? if so watch out how u do it, no need to drag line thru teeth on cleat, pullit out and let it grab when in position, Hope this helps MIke B ,

Replacement

I replaced my line after about a year and a half. Just raise and lock your rudder and pull the knot through the little check hole in the side of the rudder. Once you cut this knot, you can pull the line out of the rudder. Be sure to note how this line travels through the pole to the tiller and back. It is a snap, and I also recommend trying this with a dry boat the first time. Russell s/v Summer Luvin'

line

Yopu need to determine what is chafing your rudder line as one season tells me to look. Sometimes the routing is wrong and it will chaff against metal. Could be the line exits against the forward wall of the rudder post that the tiller is attached to. If so, then rerout the line behind the bolt as it will prevent it from chaffing. Crazy Dave

Rudder line

Hmmmmm. My boat is two weeks old and I've had it in the water twice and am already noticing a "fray" in the line. Also, it is impossible to use the line to pull the rudder up or down. I have to step back on the stern where the ladder is and push (or pull) it down with my foot. Maybe I need to check the routing of the line also? At 6'2" and 220, I'm hardly a weakling. Any suggestions?

I posted the schematic for a purchase to lower the rudder. anyone who comes up with a way to make raising it better I will buy them a beer. I have thought of putting a line thru the bottom but I really do not want to drill any holes in it.

The old, weird ways..anyting for a beer.

To Rick- My old 23 has no line to raise the rudder. The H23 rudder floats. The 1 line on the rudder is to hold the big old sucker (rudder tip to tiller bolt is just at 6 feet) down. Release the line, it hinges and floats up. Can't get any easier than that. You also have a pretty good indicator of waterlogged rudder when it stays down. Get a floating rudder. Do I get a beer?
